Last week, Mobile World Congress 2023 opened its doors. The show brings together tech companies from around the world to showcase their latest and greatest products – you can check out our preview of the best from MWC !
This year, the AR technology running through the show resembles the motif of a stone stick in Brighton. We have seen the Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition in use. Elsewhere, Oppo has bezels on the display.
Looks like others are preparing to join the fray. Apple’s Reality Pro headset has been rumored for months now, while Meta is also said to be getting ready to launch the device.
Whether you like it or not, it looks like augmented reality is the future of consumer technology. But many people still wonder about its use in daily life. Right now, most of the apps for AR and VR headsets revolve around gaming, but that certainly won’t be enough to convince casual gamers or those who aren’t interested in gaming at all. family.
However, that may not be all that is good for it. During Xiaomi’s launch event, a video was shown of a user setting up a virtual monitor to watch TV. The screen size can be adjusted to fit the space with a wave of your hand. This can be great for users who travel a lot – no more watching shows on the phone screen!
But in addition, it can be used professionally. I’m not talking about the kind of virtual desktop environment we’ve seen used in VR, but rather a way to keep working without your desk. The ability to virtually put a screen in front of you at a train station or in an airport lounge, without having to commute with a laptop or tablet, can make that experience that much better. The new AR versions also take a much more traditional design approach. For instance, it won’t feel as out of place as Meta Quest 2.
Of course, we still have a long way to go to achieve this new way of working – many of the devices mentioned don’t even have commercial release dates yet. But the concept is there and I honestly think there is a place for it. It may not be as flashy or challenging as the gaming aspect, but it is arguably much more useful, intended for a wider audience.
