Apple CEO Tim Cook said that he had made the decision to become the first CEO of Fortune 500 openly gay in order to inspire the children who wrote to him, not as a way to make more CEOs come forward.Cook, who came out publicly in 2014, said today in an interview with CNN that he was pleased with his decision to talk openly about his sexuality, even though he was a private person. He stated that he had decided to go public because children had written to him to tell them that they had been victims of intimidation or abuse because of their sexual orientation.
“I was public because I started getting kids online and I was gay,” Tim Cook told Christiane Amanpour of CNN. Cook considers homosexuality to be “God’s greatest gift to me,” he said. “I’m very proud of it.”
Tim Cook’s sexual orientation was widely speculated even before he became Apple’s CEO. Even though he was appointed CEO on August 24, 2011, Mr. Cook did not release the details of his sexual orientation until October 30, 2014. Other CEOs of large companies have since appeared, but Mr. Cook stated that it was not even in his mind. at the time.
“I learned what it was like to be a minority. The feeling of being in a minority gives you a level of empathy for other people who are not in the majority, “ Cook told CNN.
