Despite all its wonderful properties, carbon fibre has one big disadvantage when used in smartphones – it blocks radio waves, which is why we see it used so rarely. The Carbon Mobile team in Germany has been working on this problem for years and has now solved it.
The Carbon 1 MK II is the world’s first smartphone with a carbon fibre monocoque (this means the external shell provides the structural integrity, there are no internal supports). This makes the phone very light (125 g) and thin (6.3 mm).
The key is the patented HyRECM technology – Hybrid Radio Enabled Composite Material – which was developed over four years. It combines high-quality carbon fibres from Germany with a composite material that allows radio waves to pass through.
In 2017 it took 3 hours to make a casing, now the process has been optimised and takes only 30 minutes. Even after this 6x faster operation, an experienced engineer is still needed to cut the material by hand and oversee the casting process.
Since the monocoque design has no internal frame, all components are attached to the carbon fibre itself. Plastic accounts for less than 5% of the materials used in the construction of the phone. Furthermore, each Carbon Mobile phone can be disassembled and converted into raw materials.
The Carbon 1 MK II has a 6″ AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,160 px (18:9). It is protected by the thinnest Gorilla Glass Victus panel to date – it measures just 0.4 mm.
The phone will be launched with Android 10, but the 11 update will come in the second quarter. Carbon Mobile promises 2 years of software updates and monthly security patches. And now for the price – there’s no way around it, the MK II is pricey at €800. That said, it is one of the few small and light phones around and its carbon fiber monocoque is one of a kind.
The Carbon 1 MK II can be pre-ordered online today from the official site, shipping will start later this month. The phone will appear in brick and mortar stores in Germany in a couple of weeks if you want to see it in person.
