Snap, X, Discord CEOs subpoenaed for child exploitation hearing
In a joint statement, Sens. Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham announced that subpoenas had been issued to compel the CEOs of X, Discord, and Snap to testify at a hearing scheduled for Dec. 6. They emphasized the need for the executives to explain their failures to protect kids from online exploitation.
Challenges with Cooperation
Representatives for the senators revealed that X and Discord had been less cooperative, with X refusing electronic service of the subpoenas and requiring the U.S. Marshals to serve them personally.
Company Responses
While X stated that they are working to comply with the subpoena and are committed to participating in the hearing, Snap’s CEO has already agreed to testify, and TikTok is engaged in ongoing conversations with the committee. Meta declined to comment, and Discord did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Meta, TikTok, Discord, X, and Snap have all come under scrutiny for the spread of material depicting the exploitation of children and the use of their platforms by adults to groom minors.
