China and ASEAN Enhance Science, Technology, and Innovation Cooperation
Expanding Cooperation in Key Sectors
ASEAN and China are actively exploring ways to strengthen their cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. The two parties have identified key sectors for collaboration, including chip and 5G technology, electric vehicles (EVs), the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and industrial machinery and software. By focusing on these sectors, both ASEAN and China aim to foster innovation and develop new drivers of growth.
China’s Commitment to STI Enhancement
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposal of launching the China-ASEAN STI enhancement program demonstrates China’s commitment to advancing cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. China intends to provide significant financial support, with a pledge of at least $10 million by 2025. This investment will contribute to the implementation of the action plan and facilitate the development of joint projects and initiatives.
Pursuing Collaborative Opportunities
China is keen on pursuing collaboration with ASEAN member states in emerging industries. Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities in the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation. China aims to accelerate the upgrade of traditional industries and the development of emerging ones, aiming to maintain a competitive edge in the global innovation landscape and economic structure.
In line with this, China is looking to launch a ministerial dialogue on industry with ASEAN, focusing on new energy vehicles and photovoltaics. Additionally, China will continue hosting the artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation forum and the first China-ASEAN clean energy week. China encourages the active participation of all ASEAN countries in these events to foster cooperation and exchange of knowledge and expertise.
China and ASEAN are optimistic about the future of their science, technology, and innovation cooperation. Through their joint efforts, they aim to drive economic growth, foster innovation, and create new opportunities for both regions. With the implementation of the action plan 2021-2025, the partnership between ASEAN and China is set to reach new heights in the coming years.
