On December 30, 2020, after seven long years of negotiations, China and the EU concluded in principle negotiations for a Comprehensive Investment Agreement (CAI). Frayed political and trade relations with the United States, along with Brexit, have convinced EU members to put objections aside related to human rights violations and close the deal with China, now their main trading partner. The Chinese, are struggling to make up for the diplomatic setbacks of 2020, including the mismanagement of the initial Covid-19 crisis, the problem of the Xingjian labor camps and the Hong Kong crisis, and need to alternatives to their strained relations with the United States, were willing to make concessions – including some key provisions regarding the forced transfer of technology from China.
If they are really and correctly implemented by China, these provisions could give EU companies an advantage over their American competitors….
