Ericsson selected as BT’s 5G RAN provider in major UK cities

In this news, we discuss the Ericsson selected as BT’s 5G RAN provider in major UK cities.

British operator BT has selected Ericsson as the provider of the 5G radio access network (RAN) in the main cities of the United Kingdom, including London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff.

New deal builds on BT’s selection of Ericsson to deliver the company’s next-generation cloud-native dual-mode dual-mode 5G kernel earlier this year and will allow the Swedish company to handle around 50% of BT’s 5G traffic once the deployment is complete.

In addition, Ericsson will modernize BT’s existing 2G and 4G RAN infrastructure to improve customer experience and network performance for BT and EE customers, the Swedish company said in a statement on Wednesday.

The deployment of 5G RAN and the modernization of the 2G / 4G network will include products and solutions from the Ericsson radio systems portfolio.

“We are the UK leader in 5G and are delighted to work with Ericsson as a key partner to maintain this market leadership. Through this agreement, we will continue to deliver the best mobile experiences to our customers. The ultra-fast speeds of 5G will help them grow their businesses, deliver a growing choice of content on our network and stay in touch with their colleagues and friends around the world, ”said Philip Jansen, CEO of BT.

At the end of last month, BT announced the expansion of its partnership with Nokia on 5G RAN, making Nokia the largest infrastructure partner of Nokia BT. As part of the deal, Nokia will supply equipment and services to BT radio sites across the UK to support the evolution of their 5G network while optimizing their 2G and 4G networks.

The signing of new agreements by BT with two of the world’s leading equipment suppliers, Nokia and Ericsson, will allow the company not only to meet its commitments to the UK government, but also to continue to develop its award-winning 5G network through the United Kingdom, Howard Watson, BT’s Chef Technology and information officer, writes in a blog post.
