General Electric faces data breach after service provider hack

General Electric (GE) has announced that one of its service providers has been the victim of a data breach that has resulted in the personal information of current and former employees and beneficiaries being disclosed online.

In a privacy breach notice filed with the California Attorney General, the multinational company said Canon Business Process Services (Canon), a GE service provider, had breached one of its employee email accounts by an unauthorized party last month.

“On February 28, 2020, we were informed that Canon found that between February 3 and February 14, 2020, an unauthorized party had access to an email account that held documents from certain GE employees, former Employees and eligible beneficiaries include benefits for Canon systems.

The documents received from the unauthorized person may include names, addresses, social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, bank account numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth and other information from GE employees and their beneficiaries.

According to the privacy notice, GE’s systems were not affected by Canon’s security breach, although it was advised that preventive measures were taken to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.

Canon will provide free identity protection and credit monitoring services through Experian to affected GE employees and subsidiaries over a two-year period. However, you must register before June 30th to take advantage of Canon’s offer.

GE has also set up a hotline for those affected to learn more about the incident.
