German authorities said on Friday they had shut down online illegal drug markets that used the Telegram encrypted messaging service. Prosecutors in Frankfurt said police across Germany and neighboring Austria took control of nine focus groups on Thursday with a total of around 8,000 members.

Authorities said they have so far identified 28 people suspected of selling narcotics, false documents, illegally obtained data and other items through Telegram. The closed groups had names such as “Silk Road”, “GermanRefundCrew” and “Cracked Accounts Shop”. Prosecutors said Telegram groups were used to advertise merchandise, while sales were conducted in direct private talks.
