A Tanishq jewelry showroom in the town of Gandhidham, Kutch district, Gujarat, put a note on its door, apologizing to local Hindus for the brand’s controversial TV advertisement that has been withdrawn. The handwritten note in Gujarati also condemned the television advertising.

“We apologize to the Hindu community in Kutch for the shameful publicity of Tanishq,” the note read. It was taped to the showroom door on Oct. 12 and has since been removed, police said. Photos of the apology note have gone viral on social media.

The showroom manager and local police denied media reports that the showroom had been attacked by people angry at Tanishq’s ad. “No such attack has taken place,” Kutch-East Police Commissioner Mayur Patil said.

The TV commercial featured a Muslim family getting ready for an upcoming baby shower for their Hindu stepdaughter. The Tanishq jewelry brand is a division of the Titan Company, promoted by the Tata Group in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation.
