I wasn’t looking for a new MMO in my life. When I’m not obsessing over dungeons for legendary gear or logging in every night to cover a digital city, I’m a healthier human being. When I praised , I thought it could be a lightweight MMO. Not a complete disaster for my free time. But after playing Diablo 4 Beta, one thing is clear. Diablo will be the next MMO.
I’ve never played Diablo once in my life, but from everything I knew about the online quality of the series, I had high hopes that it would fill the long void left in my life by the original Guild Wars. I’ve been craving erasing maps and the old mixture of divided cities, instanced combat zones that only Path of Exile has been able to give me so far. But Diablo 4 is a lot closer to the wholesale MMO Guild Wars 2 than the instantiated online RPG I was expecting.
In my first capital, Kyovashad, I usually had a large group of players living around me, going back and forth between my lair and my blacksmith, perfecting my equipment. Outside of town in the open world, two or he would often run into other players every ten minutes of his adventuring alone. When it came time to tackle the zone event in the northern Ko Dragon Fortress, about 10 other players came to burn a level 30 blood bishop and destroyed my spell effects screen. A dungeon is the only place that hides in a separate instance from other players.
