Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati announced on Monday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune to set up a Rs 17 crore supercomputing facility. The MoU was signed by IIT-G Director TG Sitharam and C-DAC Director General Hemant Darbari during a virtual event attended by Union Ministers.

The agreement is for a period of five years, IIT-G said in a statement. The new supercomputer with “650 TFLOPS is more powerful and technologically superior installation”, which will play an important role in the field of scientific and technical applications, he said.

The IT and communication center of IIT-G is already equipped with “Param Ishan”, a “250 TF” supercomputer. The institute will organize training courses to popularize the use and applications of supercomputers in the northeast region, the statement said.

“We also plan to link this facility to our new interdisciplinary master’s program in data science jointly launched by the departments of electronics and electrical engineering, computer science and engineering and mathematics,” Sitharam added. The supercomputing facility is part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
