Jio planning to sell 5G smartphones for Rs 2,500-3,000 apiece: Company official

In this news, we discuss the Jio planning to sell 5G smartphones for Rs 2,500-3,000 apiece: Company official.

Reliance Jio plans to launch a 5G smartphone for less than Rs 5,000 and gradually reduce the price to Rs 2,500-3,000 per unit as the operation scales up, according to a company official. The company will target 20-30 crore mobile phone users who are currently using a 2G connection. “Jio wants to bring the device for less than Rs 5,000. When we increase sales, the price can be between Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,000,” a company official said on condition of anonymity. An email request sent to Reliance Jio did not elicit a response. At present, 5G smartphones are available in India in a price range starting at Rs 27,000.

Jio was the first company to launch free 4G mobile phones in India for consumers where they were required to pay a refundable deposit of Rs 1500 for a Jio Phone. At the 43rd Annual General Meeting, Chairman and CEO of Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani, claimed to make India a ‘2G-mukt’ (without 2G connections) and stressed the need to accelerate the migration of 350 million from Indians (currently using a 2G mobile phone) to an affordable smartphone, at a time when India is on the verge of the 5G era. Ambani also announced an investment of Rs 33,737 crore by Google for a 7.7% stake in Jio Platforms, and said that Jio will partner with the US tech giant to create a smartphone operating system based on Android.

The company is also working on its own 5G network equipment and has asked the telecommunications department to allocate spectrum for it for testing before exporting these products. The government has yet to respond to Reliance Jio’s request. At present, India does not have 5G services and the government has not even allocated spectrum to telecom operators for conducting field trials to promote the national ecosystem for the technology of next generation.
