RALEIGH, NC (AP) – Kai Crutchfield scored 10 of his 20 points in the last 4½ minutes, Jakia Brown-Turner finished with 23 points and the No.2 North Carolina State rallied 14 points in the fourth quarter to remain undefeated, beating Virginie Tech 89-87 Sunday.
Kayla Jones, who made two free throws in the 15th second, had 22 points for NC State (11-0, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).
The Wolfpack hadn’t played since Jan. 3, and the three-week layoff showed. The only absence related to coronavirus test or contract tracing was important, standout center Elissa Cunane missing on game. She’s probably out for at least the next one game, also against the Hokies.
Georgia Amoore at 3 points with 4.4 seconds left for Virginia Tech narrowed the gap to 88-87 before Raina Perez hit a free kick for the Wolfpack. A lift near midfield was a long way off the mark.
Sophomore center Elizabeth Kitley tied a career-high 30 points and tallied 13 rebounds and Aisha Sheppard added 24 points for Virginia Tech (7-7, 2-7).
In four minutes of the third quarter, the Hokies knocked out a 10-point hole to come up 56-53. The spread fell to 69-59 at the end of the quarter.
Virginia Tech’s 10-0 run that involved the third and fourth quarters pushed the margin to 73-59 before NC State rallied behind Crutchfield.
Virginia Tech led 24-17 at the end of the first quarter as Cayla King and Sheppard each provided nine points. King’s 3 points – his fourth of game – extended the lead to start the second quarter.
The Wolfpack led 37-36 over Jones’ point 3 at 4:01 of the second quarter. It was the team’s fifth 3 in the quarter – and it ended with a total of nine before half-time. The Hokies scored just three points in the 4:20 first-half final, dropping to a 47-41 hole at the break.
Virginia Tech: The Hokies have lost six of their last seven games. They reached the 70 point mark in just one of these games.
NC State: The Wolfpack made 14 of 29 attempts from 3 points for the season’s highest point total beyond the arc.
Virginia Tech: Thursday against NC State for the start of a homestand three-game.
NC State: Thursday in Virginia Tech for what will be his only route in January game and the first of three straight away from home, a stretch that includes a visit to No. 1 in Louisville on February 1.
