Odisha Police said on Tuesday they would further step up action on drug trafficking and speed up the fight against brown sugar and ganja based on satellite map data shared by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO ). Police Director General Abhay said this during a press conference on the seizure of huge contraband material. “State police seized a total of 1,054 quintals of ganja between January and September of this year,” the DGP said.
It is the highest seizure recorded by state police in a year, Abhay said, adding that the maximum amount of contraband items weighing up to 413.14 quintals was seized in the district of Koraput, followed by Malkangiri (240.66 quintals) and the district of Gajapati (126.58 quintals). ). While the average seizure over the past 10 years is 312 quintals, an average of 414 quintals of ganja has been seized over the past five years, he said.
That aside, the DGP said, “Odisha police have stepped up financial investigations against the organized gangs behind this trafficking.” The DGP said combating drug trafficking remains high on the Odisha government’s top priorities and the state police are determined to tackle drug trafficking. The DGP said state police in recent years have used ISRO data shared by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to launch a crackdown on the illegal cultivation of ganja and poppy.
“The satellite mapping of poppy cultivation has stabilized over the past 10 years for which we are able to obtain precise information. As the mapping of ganja (dry cannabis) is recent, it will take even longer to obtain precise data. Once that is done, we will be able to perform workouts with much more precision, ”said Abhay.
Regarding interstate ganja smuggling, the DGP said Odisha police had raised the issue with the DGPs in Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
