In this news, we discuss the Sailing-British, American challengers launch America’s Cup yachts.
British challengers INEOS Team UK unveiled their second-generation America’s Cup yacht in Auckland on Saturday, just 24 hours after other challengers American Magic launched their second boat and nearly capsized it. The British AC75 foiling monohull, named ‘Britannia’, had a significant difference from their first generation boat, with the addition of a choppy keel.
Agitation is believed to help reduce wave resistance and is designed to help lift the boat out of the water and then reduce air resistance as it foils. “It looks like a rocket, let’s hope it flies like a rocket too,” skipper Ben Ainslie told reporters at the launch.
“We have to push the boundaries and I think with this boat we pushed it pretty… hard. “I don’t think we’ve left much on the table and that the whole team shares that philosophy, that we have to go if we’re going to win this thing.”
Britannia’s launch follows American Magic’s “ Patriot ” on Friday, but the New York Yacht Club union had some issues during its first trials on the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland. Video footage emerged on Saturday of the nearly capsized yacht as it attempted a jibe at around 20 knots before falling back into the water and coming to an almost sudden stop.
“We had a great dive, and it was exciting,” said skipper Terry Hutchinson. “It was nothing we haven’t seen or done on our other boats.” Italian union Luna Rossa is due to launch its second-generation yacht on Tuesday, with the teams having just two more months of testing before a regatta that also involves the holders of Team New Zealand in December.
The challenger series will then run from January 15 to February 22 of next year before the America’s Cup match against Team New Zealand begins on March 6.
