From virtual reality collaborations to robots drafting contracts, some of the technology adopted by lawyers surprises many in an industry known for its traditional ways of operating. Yet it is probably the increasing use of more basic tools that is transforming the lives of lawyers the most during the pandemic.
Three trends have led to a seismic shift in digital law that has been exacerbated by lockdowns, says Sergio Letelier, general counsel M&A at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. They are: greater familiarity with the digital world; proliferation of big data; and great improvements in legal technology.
Lawyers love to print legal documents to mark with a red pen. But when forced to work from home, Letelier says they were less likely to print reams of paper and edit more in Word and Google documents instead.
