A prolific burglar broke into Cardiff University Students’ Union twice within a month and stole laptops from a student lettings agent to fund his heroin habit.
While two of the burglaries were unsuccessful Toby was able to steal electronic equipment from the offices of Student Living on two occasions – even after they had changed the locks. He was caught on his second attempt at breaking into the students’ union and was also found with a quantity of heroin hidden in his anus, a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard on Monday.
Eugene Toby, 38, committed five non-dwelling burglaries in Cardiff between August 9 and September 1 at the students’ union, Student Living in City Road, and Cineworld in Mary Ann Street.
Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir said the first burglary occurred at Student Living on August 9 and resulted in two laptops worth a total of £1,100 being taken as well as parcels belonging to students.
The defendant attempted to steal bottles of spirits from a staff storeroom in Cineworld on August 21 but he was seen on CCTV and attempts were made to detain him until the police arrived though Toby was able to escape empty-handed.
The second burglary took place at the students’ union with Toby gaining entry through the Senghenydd Road entrance before making his way to the third floor and taking three Apple Mini Macs, one iPad, one laptop, and a baseball cap.
