Tokyo to hold gymnastics meet featuring foreign teams

In this news, we discuss the Tokyo to hold gymnastics meet featuring foreign teams.

Tokyo plans to host an international gymnastics meet next month that will exempt non-Japanese athletes from a 14-day quarantine period, an approach that could foreshadow planning for the Olympics postponed to next year. The Japan Gymnastics Association announced that the competition will feature athletes from the United States, Russia, China and Japan.

The one-day event is scheduled for November 8 at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium. Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported that 2,000 fans would be allowed to attend and that athletes’ travel would be restricted while in the country. Kyodo said non-Japanese athletes will take a polymerase chain reaction test before leaving their homes and will also be tested daily in Japan. The event will involve 32 gymnasts – eight from each country.

Tokyo organizers are studying the eventuality of next year’s Olympics, slated to open on July 23, 2021. The most difficult problem is how to let 15,400 Olympic and Paralympic athletes compete in Tokyo and avoid spreading the coronavirus. In addition to the athletes, the organizers will have to host thousands of team officials, technical officials who direct the competitions, media, broadcasters and sponsors. The issue of fan participation in events or allowing non-Japanese fans to enter the country is also open. AP SSC SSC
