Britain and the European Union can strike a Brexit trade deal and the form of a deal is clear, but London will not sign a deal at all costs, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Finance Minister said on Thursday .

With just five weeks to leave the UK out of EU orbit, the two sides are trying to strike a trade deal that would avoid a tumultuous finale to the five-year Brexit crisis. “With a constructive attitude and goodwill on all sides, we can make it happen,” Sunak told Sky. “The form of the agreement is clear.”

“It’s better” to get an agreement, Sunak told LBC radio. “We absolutely should not try to get a deal at all costs, it is not the right thing to do.” European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday the bloc was ready for the possibility of Britain leaving the EU without a new trade deal despite “real progress” in the tortuous Brexit negotiations .

An official involved in the negotiations said a deal was possible, but unlikely until the weekend at the earliest. An EU diplomat said it was more likely to happen next week.
