British regulators said on Friday that Instagram would crack down on “hidden advertising” from social media influencers. The Autorité de la concurrence et des marchés said that the owner of Instagram Facebook has pledged to tighten policies to restrict influencers who don’t disclose they get paid to promote businesses on his platform.

This is part of a survey of the influencer industry launched two years ago by the Watchdog. Regulators fear Instagram hasn’t done enough under consumer protection laws to stop covert advertising, which is illegal in the UK. They want it to be harder to induce people misled with posts that aren’t tagged as advertisements. Influencers are online personalities with thousands of followers who can earn hefty fees from brands for endorsing or reviewing their products or services.

“These changes mean there will be no excuse for companies to ignore the way their brands are advertised either – making life a lot harder for those who are not forthright and honest with their followers.” , said Andrea Coscelli, CEO of CMA. Under the new policy, Instagram will ask users to confirm whether they are receiving an award for promoting a product or service and, if so, to clearly disclose it.

The company will also start using technology and algorithms to spot users who haven’t made it clear that their posts are advertisements, and then flag those users to the businesses they’re promoting. Instagram is also opening its “paid partnership” tool, so that any user can display a label at the top of a post.
