WhatsApp Payments was launched in India after a long two-year wait. The Facebook’s proprietary messaging app first proposed the idea of introducing the payment feature in India in 2018, but it took two years for the company to get clearance from NPCI. WhatsApp has rolled out the payment functionality to support the leading payment app in India including Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, and others.

“We’re working on it with the National Payments Corporation of India, which oversees everything to make sure it’s secure and reliable. And we built it using India’s Unified Payment Interface, which allows anyone to instantly accept payments through different apps and businesses to provide people with great service. ” Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg had spoken about the launch.

“With UPI, India has created something really special and opens up a world of opportunities for the micro and small businesses which are the backbone of the Indian economy. India is the first country to do something like this. I am glad that we were able to support this effort and work together to contribute to a more digital India. I would like to thank all of our partners who made this possible, ”he added.
