Gary, Indiana (WLS)-COVID’s pandemic has forced students to study from home, exposing major technology gaps in many regions.
On Thursday, 100 young scholars at Gary’s 21st Century Charter School received a brand new Chromebook, thanks to generous donations.

“I remember I didn’t have the right resources to be completely successful,” he said.

“It’s something new and it feels really special because I’ve never had it before,” said sixth grade Payton Lanier.Two years ago, extensive distance learning wasn’t even an option. It is now a way of life for many students. However, not everyone has access to reliable technology. There, Eric Smoot Henfil from Gary intervened.

Smoot-Hemphill co-owns Redefined Fitness in Wilmette. He was homeless, but athletics gave him way, and now he wants to give back to young people.“What do you know, I wore this shirt for a reason, I’m grateful,” said Smoot-Hemphill. “That speaks for itself.”And paying it in advance has a big impact.
“It feels great,” said fifth grade Kaden Hargrove. “I’m so happy I can’t say anything.”
Principal Nikki Dates said the donation would send a strong message that “anything is possible”.
