YouTube is expanding its hate and harassment policies to ban content that targets an individual or group with conspiracy theories that have been used to justify real-world violence, such as QAnon, the video-sharing platform said Thursday. online owned by Google.

“Dealing with misinformation and nefarious conspiracy theories is a challenge as the content is always on the move and evolving. Any content threatening or harassing someone by suggesting that they are complicit in harmful conspiracies like QAnon or Pizzagate will be prohibited on the platform. According to YouTube, views from un-subscribed recommendations on major Q-related channels have fallen by more than 80% since January 2019, when the platform updated its recommendation system. In addition, the platform has deleted tens of thousands of QAnon videos and terminated hundreds of channels under its existing policies, especially those that explicitly threaten violence or deny the existence of major violent events.

The latest move builds on YouTube’s efforts to strengthen and evolve its policies and enforcement work, which revolve around four pillars: removing violent content, reducing the spread of harmful disinformation, raising awareness of authoritative voice and reward trusted creators.
