The $ 450 question: Should journals pay peer reviewers?  |  Science

For many busy scientists, receiving another invitation from one academic journal to another manuscript can trigger some whining. The work takes time and the rewards can seem intangible. what more, editors work for free, even while the large commercial editors who run many journals make huge profits.

But despite the occasional, exasperated cries of “I should be paid for this,” the scientists persevered. Many cite a sense of duty to help advance their disciplines, as well as the need for reciprocity, knowing that other scholars volunteer to review their manuscript submissions.

But last week, researchers at a scholarly publishing conference debated a provocative question: Should peer reviewers be paid?
