The search for natural remedies for human ailments based on traditional medicines is the driving force behind the research of Dr. Helen Woolner, winner of the 2020 Zonta Club of Wellington Science Award.
Helen is a chemist and recipient of a New Zealand Health Research Council Pacific Postdoctoral Fellowship. She is a member of the New Zealand Health Research Council evaluation committee and a member of the Cook Islands Te Vairanga Kite Pakari Research Association. Once the borders reopened, Helen says that “the Zonta Prize will enable her to travel to the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany”.
The main objective of his current research is to improve our understanding of a traditional Samoan anti-inflammatory herbal medicine. Helen is studying the plant’s potential in treating human diseases, such as obesity, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and tuberculosis.
Helen received her late award by Dame Margaret Sparrow on behalf of the Zonta Club of Wellington at an event hosted at Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka by the Vice-Chancellor…
