Compared to the recent state of the city speech by San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten, Mayor Todd Gloria’s first state of the city speech (at least his first as mayor) was a masterclass on how vulnerable you can be in the face of gravity. are without appearing weak and without deflating the people you need to rally.
Gloria clearly listed the city’s problems and declared the city’s condition “fragile”. It’s a very interesting word to choose, and I’m sure they spent a lot of time on it. They probably didn’t want to choose “bad” or “messy,” but they also didn’t want to cover up the fact that it’s a mess.
Fragile, however, means it can be broken easily.
What would break up the city? An earthquake? Riot? What would a break actually look like? Would some sort of void open up on Broadway, with cars and Sushi Deli plummeting?
Gloria is probably thinking about the money.
