The snow that fell in the Denver metro area on Wednesday evening may have surprised us, but the humidity was welcomed.

If you were surprised to wake up Thursday with nearly a foot of snow on your doorstep, you certainly weren’t alone. As snow showers were forecast, the storm dumped a shocking amount of powder across much of the metropolitan area. The Denver International Airport weather station reported 9.6 inches of snow, and some areas of downtown reported more than a foot.
But how could a storm of this magnitude sneak up on us? What happened is something that makes Denver’s weather unique and is truly an awesome weather event. Let’s go dig:
