On Thursday, December 1, thousands of people attended the University of Virginia’s Lighting of the Lawn event. This year’s celebration took on a more solemn tone as it also remembered the student-athletes who died earlier this month.
“We actually ended up raising a little more than $1,000 for the family,” Lighting of the Lawn Co-Chair Alex Vogel said.
Raffle proceeds will benefit the families of Lavel Davis, Jr., D’Sean Perry, and Deven Chandler.
This gathering was held to provide solidarity and strength to students who are still coming to grips with the November 13 tragedy.
He believes this year’s Lighting of the Lawn had a truly remarkable spirit, and the event’s committee re-programmed elements to match recent feelings.
“At first, we all didn’t know how to react. “It was really frightening, and it certainly lasted into the next morning,” Vogel said.
“I think the most essential thing we did was incorporate the [football players’] numbers on the balance sheet over there, which I thought was incredibly remarkable and they remained illuminated throughout the entire presentation,” Voegel said.
More than 13,000 people attended, outnumbering last year’s Lighting of the Lawn.
