Mayor Tim Keller has a lot of money in the bank to win reelection. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
“They’re saving a lot of that money to the closing months or weeks of the campaign,” KAT political analyst Brian Sanderoff said. “The mayor has a distinct advantage because he has all of that public campaign finance money.”
According to the latest campaign finance reports Keller has about $520,000 ready to spend and that’s just the public money he qualified for.
A separate political action committee that is supporting Keller also has $51,0000 sitting in the bank. This means that Keller has five times more cash on hand than his leading opponent, Sheriff Manuel Gonzales.
“In terms of the amount of money, cash in hand, Mayor Keller’s campaign has a distinct advantage because they’ve saved up a lot of the public campaign money to the end,” Sanderoff said.
There is a political action committee supporting the sheriff that has about $92,000. Gonzales has also raised about $91,000 in private funds while he fights in court to get his hands a hold of the same public money Keller is using to run his campaign.
“Initially, Manny Gonzales did not raise money privately because he thought he was going to get the public monies,” Sanderoff said.
Radio show host Eddy Aragon has raised $31,000 and has $13,000 left.
