(Istanbul) – Turkey must guarantee the immediate release from detention of opposition politician Selahattin Demirtaş following a judgment by the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights on 22 December 2020, Human Rights Watch said today.
The Grand Chamber ruled that by first detaining Demirtaş and then by prolonging his detention for more than four years, the Turkish government had pursued an ulterior aim of preventing him from carrying out his political activities, of depriving voters of their representative elected, and “to stifle pluralism and limit the freedom of political debate: the very heart of the concept of democratic society. The Grand Chamber ordered Demirtaş’s immediate release.
