The UK medical device regulator admitted it was concerned about the AI chatbot maker backed by VC Babylon Health. He admitted this in a letter to a clinician who sounded the alarm bells about Babylon’s approach to patient safety and corporate governance since 2017.
The HSJ reported on the MHRA letter to Dr David Watkins yesterday. TechCrunch has reviewed the letter (see below), which is dated December 4, 2020. We also saw additional context on what was discussed at a meeting mentioned in the letter, as well as the review of other correspondence between Watkins and the regulator in which he details a number of very diverse concerns.
In an interview, he stressed that the concerns shared by the regulator are “much broader” than the (important but) unique issue of chatbot security.
