A newly funded particle physics experiment may be able to examine the structure of individual electrons – particles that have so far been indivisible.
A daring project to peer inside fundamental particles, called Measurement Of a Lepton Lepton Electroweak Reaction (MOLLER), is a Canada-led international effort involving collaborators from UW and Memorial University in Canada, but also from the United States, Germany, Italy, Mexico.
UM physicists Michael Gericke and Juliette Mammei, along with co-researcher Wouter Deconinck, received $ 2.3 million for MOLLER from the Canadian Foundations for Innovation (CFI). Their goal is to measure the interaction properties between pairs of leptons (especially electrons) down to the separation distances of a zeptometer, which is 10 to 21 meters (about a million times smaller than the size of the smallest atomic nucleus), with unprecedented precision.
To accomplish this, the team will build and operate a wide range of ultra-sensitive electron detectors in the world’s most advanced electron beam facility, the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the Jefferson Laboratory, Va. (JLab )….
