Warner Bros. Pictures released a new trailer for the upcoming Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie as Barbie. The trailer features Barbie questioning the perfection of Barbie Land and embarking on a journey to the real world with Ken to learn about the universe. The cast includes America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, and many more. The movie is set to be released on July 21 and promises to be a campy, queer, and existential exploration of Barbie’s world.
Go Magazine – Warner Bros. Pictures released a new trailer yesterday for the highly anticipated Barbie Movie. Margot Robbie’s Barbie promptly ruins a perfectly choreographed dance party by asking the others dancing Barbies: “Do you guys ever think about dying?”
Barbie is alarmed by recent occurrences in Barbie Land (her once arched feet are now flat!!! She fell off her roof instead of floating!!!). She is therefore prompted to pierce the veil of perfection by another Barbie (Kate McKinnon) to visit the real world in search of “the truth about the universe.” Kate McKinnon’s Barbie gives Margot Robbie’s Barbie the choice between a stiletto, representing the Barbie world, and a Birkenstock, representing the real world. At first, Margot’s Barbie is like, f*ck the Birkenstock I’ll take the heel, but Kate’s Barbie challenges her to try again. And so Barbie and Ken embark on a journey (while listening to ‘Closer To Fine’ by The Indigo Girls) to the real world to learn some lessons from humans.
But things don’t go so smoothly. The CEO of Mattel, Will Ferrell’s character, demands that Barbie and Ken are captured, and the pair appear to be arrested in some iconic-looking mug shots.
“To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken,” an official logline for the movie teases.
Barbie’s cast also includes America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, Jamie Demetriou, Connor Swindells, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Ritu Arya and Dua Lipa.
Barbie was written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Little Women and Lady Bird director, who cowrote the screenplay with her partner Noah Baumbach.
Barbie in all its campy queer glory is in theaters July 21. Take your girlfriend on a date as a way to honor the many Barbies you made scissor when you were playing growing up. Perv.
