As older adults, healthcare workers, firefighters and others roll up their sleeves for a COVID-19 vaccine, there is a wave of research to vaccinate children, for whom no vaccine has yet been licensed. . Even though young people are less likely to become seriously ill, doctors and scientists agree that their vaccination is crucial for their own protection and that of the general population. And because companies already have strong data from trials on adults, they are conducting smaller studies in children that focus on safety and immune responses to COVID-19 vaccines.

The first two vaccines to receive emergency use authorization in the United States for adults are currently in clinical trials in young people, with the first results expected by the summer. Pfizer and BioNTech have completed enrollment of over 2,200 volunteers aged 12-15, and Moderna is completing enrollment of 3,000 planned volunteers with the same minimum age.
