NASA has just released an astonishing high-definition video that its car-sized Perseverance rover captured during its epic landing in Mars’ Jezero Crater on Thursday (February 18).
The unprecedented footage takes viewers on the heart-wrenching race of Perseverance, even showing the moment the rover, still attached via cables to his “sky crane” descent step, hit the red dirt on the floor of Jezero.
“For those who are wondering how you land on Mars, or why it is so difficult, or how cool it would be to do, you don’t need to look any further,” Steve Jurczyk, Acting Administrator of The NASA said in a statement today (February 22), when the entry, descent and landing (EDL) images were revealed.
“The perseverance is just beginning and has already provided some of the most iconic visuals in the history of space exploration,” Jurczyk added. “This reinforces the remarkable level of engineering and precision required to build and fly a vehicle to the Red Planet.”
Perseverance’s EDL camera system also includes a microphone, which the team had hoped would pick up Martian winds and other EDL sounds. This did not happen, but the microphone turned on after landing, …
