Science has led to incredible achievements and knowledge of our world: we can send ships to other planets, we can send each other letters in seconds, we know more about the animals that live on our faces. You didn’t see that one coming, did you?

National Geographic has compiled some of the more scientific aspects inducing nausea in a blog known as Bloody details. And now, like any successful blog, it has developed into book form, still in the hands of science journalist Erika Engelhaupt.

Topics range from the most painful insect bite and urine toxicity in the pool, to the frequency of cannibalism and rough sex in the animal kingdom. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
