Health officials urge Americans not to drop their guard against COVID-19 as researchers uncover new variants that may already be more transmissible and may also be somewhat resistant to the vaccine.
“At this level of cases, with the spread of variants, we risk completely losing the hard-earned ground that we have won,” said Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a briefing from the White House Monday. “These variations pose a very real threat to our people and our progress.”
While experts have been tracking variants first identified in the UK and South Africa, they are also seeing red flags in other variants discovered closer to home in Brazil, New York and California.
