AMD’s new Radeon RX 7600 is a mainstream GPU that is similar to Nvidia’s recent RTX 4060 Ti release in that it has a good product but is overpriced. So, we looked into this new graphics card to find out how much it’s really worth and how much you should expect to pay for it. The Radeon RX 7600 was going to cost $300 until a few days before it came out, and we had already written a review in which we were very critical of it. AMD called us last week to find out what we thought of the RX 7600. We told them it was boring and, in some ways, unnecessary.

AMD Radeon RX 7600: Description

We told them that if the price didn’t go down to at least $250, it wouldn’t be worth putting out. We were sure that it would cost $250 or less in the first few months after it came out. AMD probably heard similar things from other reviewers, which is why they changed the price at the last minute. We had to go back and change a few things in our review because of this.

Still, it’s a little frustrating that they only cut the price by $30, bringing it down to $270. This means that the 7600 is still overpriced and not very good. AMD says that the new Radeon RX 7600, which costs $270, is made for 1080p gaming at high to ultra-high settings and is optimized for 1080p gaming. We’re going to argue against that. 8GB of VRAM is already not enough for some 1080p games, and it won’t be enough in a year or two, if what game developers say is true.

There are all kinds of graphics cards coming through my tiny apartment, but when we opened up the RX 7600, we did not expect it to be so small. Maybe just used to seeing so many huge GPUs that barely fit in computer cases, but the RX 7600 is only 8 inches long, so it’s perfect for smaller PC builds. And because the Radeon RX 7600 is low-power, you only need one 8-pin connector. During testing, the GPU used a maximum of just 164W of power. This is the standard current-generation card for smaller PC builds, but you’ll only be able to play games in 1080p with it.

The RX 7600 is based on RDNA 3, just like the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT. This means that it has updated ray-tracing cores and uses a little less power. The layout of the compute units is also the same, and the 7600 has 32 of them. The Radeon RX 7600 has 64 stream processors in each compute unit, for a total of 2,048 stream processors. AI accelerators, on the other hand, are something new to this generation.

As of now, these don’t do much for games because they are meant to speed up more traditional AI tasks. But given how well DLSS and XeSS have worked for Nvidia and Intel we hope AMD can find a way to improve FSR with these AI accelerators. It needs the help, especially when it comes to ray tracing.

AMD Radeon RX 7600: Features

AMD used the same RDNA 3 graphics cores in the Radeon RX 7600 that were first used in the top-of-the-line 7900-series GPUs. This new architecture has dedicated AI accelerators, AV1 encoding, DisplayPort 2.1 (the RTX 40-series has DisplayPort 1.4a), second-generation ray tracing and Infinity Cache hardware, and more. The more expensive GPUs use a cutting-edge chiplet design that puts memory controllers on either side of the main die. This budget chip, on the other hand, uses a traditional single 6-nanometer die (204mm2) that fits everything in.

The older Radeon RX 6600 is still good, but the newer Radeon RX 7600 has more hardware for less money. As part of AMD’s push for AI, memory and GPU clock speeds have gone up, the number of stream processors and RT accelerators has gone up, and AI accelerators have been added for the first time. Spoiler alert: Unlike Nvidia’s $400 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, the Radeon RX 7600 is a real generational upgrade in terms of performance.

The Radeon RX 7600 has 8GB of GDDR6 memory and a narrow 128-bit bus, just like the 4060 Ti and the Radeon RX 6600 before it. That means that this graphics card is really made for 1080p gaming, which is a reasonable expectation for a graphics card of this price. You can play at 1440p resolution if you turn down some settings, but modern games tend to eat up VRAM quickly, so it may not work for long. AMD’s Infinity Cache on-die also helps keep things going at 1080p. When you move up to 1440p, more data will be sent over that slow 128-bit bus.

AMD Radeon RX 7600: Performance

Since Nvidia has been making mistakes recently, AMD has a good chance of taking some of its market share if it can offer gamers compelling performance. When it comes to gaming performance, the AMD Radeon RX 7600 pulls off quite a coup for Team Red. Most of the time, the RTX 4060 is the main competition for the RX 7600, but since the Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti just came out, it’s the best comparison right now.

Does this have to be fair? No, it’s not, and the RX 7600 loses to the RTX 4060 Ti in almost every way, but it doesn’t lose by that much. In general, the RX 7600 outperforms the RTX 3060 in rasterization workloads as well as the RTX 3060 Ti. The RTX 4060 Ti didn’t deliver the kind of advancement over its predecessor that we really wanted to see from the RX 7600. The RX 7600 performs rasterization very well, but its upgraded ray accelerators are much faster than the RX 6600.

Final Words

The AMD Radeon RX 7600 is the most affordable graphics card from the current generation. It costs just $269 and is made for 1080p gaming. Most of the time, it’s easy for the graphics card to reach this goal, but frame rates drop in games with a lot of ray-tracing effects. But if the games you want to play don’t support those effects to begin with, you’ll have a good time with 1080p.
