Asus ROG Strix G16 review (2023) a powerful gaming laptop

Fortunately, the Asus ROG Strix G16 screen has a very stable viewing angle.

The 16-inch Asus ROG Strix G16 is the choice for those who want a smaller esports laptop than the 17-inch ROG Strix G17. The ROG Strix G16 has the best Intel Core i9-13980HX Raptor Lake chip and the new GeForce RTX 4070 from Nvidia. This is the second laptop we’ve tried with Nvidia’s mainstream laptop GPU built on Ada Lovelace.

Asus ROG Strix G16: Description

With a 16-inch 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) 165 Hz IPS display, the ROG Strix G16 is also the latest laptop to switch from a 16:9 to a 16:10 aspect ratio. This laptop can compete with some of the best gaming PC on the market. It has 16GB of DDR5-4800 memory, a 1TB SSD, and the high-quality chassis we’ve come to expect from Asus ROG.

The Asus ROG Strix G16 (G614J) was so close to being an all-in-one gaming machine that did a good job in all areas and didn’t have any problems. but didn’t make it. Here’s what went down. For $1,999, the Asus ROG Strix G16 gives you a springy keyboard, dazzling speakers, and powerful speed, all of which are powered by a battery that lasts a long time. But it all falls apart when you look at that bad 16-inch screen that is full of crap. Even the fact that this laptop is really thick doesn’t help.

unit is a powerful configuration with an Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, an Nvidia RTX 4080 Laptop 175W dGPU, and a mini LED monitor. If your money allows, you can also choose the 4090 for this series. Both 2023 ROG Scars have the same Core i9 HX processor, GPUs, RAM, storage, batteries, and other parts. They also both have a cooling module with three fans and a lot of radiators. This is a big improvement over the thermal modules of previous Scar generations, but the Scar 18 is slightly better at cooling because of its larger size, which lets it have larger heatpipes and a bigger fan on the GPU side.

Asus ROG Strix G16: Pros and Cons

  • Fast refresh rate and reaction time make gaming go more smoothly.
  • The keyboard and mouse are easy to use.

  • Fans that are loud and working hard

Asus ROG Strix G16: Design

Asus ROG Strix G16 review

The ROG Strix G16’s case has been remade from the ground up for 2023, and I think it looks great. The lid is made of metal, and the rest of the case is made of plastic. Plastic doesn’t have to mean “cheap,” because the ROG Strix G16 has a satin-like sheen and a high-quality fit and finish all over. Asus’ RGB lighting isn’t too flashy. A thin “under-glow” LED strip runs along the front edge of the laptop and wraps around to the sides. Each key on the keyboard also has its own light.

Using Aura Sync in the Asus Armoury Crate program, you can change how each one works. When it comes to the keyboard, Asus put five programmable hotkeys at the top, named M1 through M5. By default, they control things like the volume, whether the microphone is on or off, and a quick way to get to the Armoury Crate. Even though the ROG Strix G16 seems big enough to fit a number pad, it doesn’t have one.

Only two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports are on the right side of the ROG Strix G16. The left side, on the other hand, has one Thunderbolt 4 port, one USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C port, a GbE port, an HDMI 2.1 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a power port that looks like a barrel. Large fans on the sides and back of the laptop let the heat from the Core i9-13980HX and GeForce RTX 4070 escape.

The laptop is 13.94 inches (350 mm) by 10.39 inches (264 mm) by 0.89 inches (304 mm) and weighs 5.51 pounds (2.5 kg). The Gigabyte Aorus 15X weighs 5.73 pounds, the HP Omen 16 weighs 5.2 pounds, and the Razer Blade 15 weighs 4.4 pounds.

Asus ROG Strix G16: Display

Asus ROG Strix G16 review

The 16-inch, 1920x1200p, 165Hz screen on the Asus ROG Strix G16 would look great on a machine that costs half as much. In the trailer for Renfield, the main character, Renfield, dragged food for Dracula across a poorly lit room where it was hard to see every corner. Even though the Strix’s screen was dark, it was harder to see because of the glare from my window. Renfield was walking back to his apartment, and the only bright thing he saw was his purple and pink Swiffer Wet Jet.

The lettuce, on the other hand, was a boring green. It was hard to play Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on a screen that wasn’t very bright. Since the contrast is off, when you go into a darker room, every area is very dark. The grassy hills in the countryside were dull, and my torch’s light looked dim compared to the darkness around it. At lower settings, it’s fun to play around with the 165Hz, which helped me notice enemy attacks and moves more quickly.

Our colorimeter showed that the Asus ROG Strix G16 only covered 75.9% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. This is terrible compared to the average expensive gaming laptop, which covers 88.4% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Even though the Katana 15, Zephyrus G15, and Legion 7i didn’t make the average either (46.1%, 79.9%, and 80.2%, respectively), the Strix G16 was still lower on the list than those three.

The Asus ROG Strix G16 is hard to recommend when it only has 279 nits of brightness and the average for its group is 384 nits. Again, the Katana 15 sucked (248 nits), but at least the Zephyrus G15 did okay (307 nits), and the Legion 7i crushed it with 488 nits.

Noise, Heat and Speakers

Asus has totally changed the way this 2023 Scar 16 handles heat compared to the 2022 generations. Now there are three fans, a bigger set of heatpipes, and heaters on the side and along the whole back edge. They added a huge cooler that runs the length of the back, with a heatpipe on top that feeds into the main heatpipes for the CPU and GPU.

Due to its smaller size, however, the cooling area on this 16-inch Scar is a little smaller than on the 18-inch Scar. Because of this, the parts in the Scar 16 run a little hotter than in the tested Scar 18, and putting the laptop on a raiser stand to help fresh air flow under the body will make a bigger difference on this model.

In terms of noise, you can expect 51 dBA with max-fans on Manual, about 50 dBA on Turbo, about 42 dBA on Performance, and 35 dBA on Silent. we haven’t heard this coil whine, but that doesn’t mean you won’t hear it on yours. Make sure to listen carefully for any possible problems in your return term. Now, as far as the outer case temperatures go, there are some hotspots above the keyboard and on the underbelly, over the main components, that go over 50 degrees Celsius on Performance and Turbo, but the arm rest and keyboard areas, which you’ll be touching, rarely go above the high-30s.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Asus gives you a full QWERTY keyboard layout and extra hotkeys at the top. The hotkeys can be programmed, and by default, they control the volume, microphone, fan settings, and entry to Armoury Crate. With the Armoury Crate software, you can change what the programmed keys do. All of the keys have their own backlit RGB color.

The keys have 2 mm of travel, according to Asus, and we found it easy to type on. My fingers got used to the keys quickly. They were soft, so we could use them for hours at a time without getting tired. The site keyhero.com is where we go to try keyboards. we have said many times that we are not the best or most accurate typist, but we got 67.81 words per minute and 97.1% accuracy. Even though the ROG Strix G16 has a 16-inch screen, Asus couldn’t find room for a number pad.

This may be disappointing to some, but some of my coworkers are happy to do without it. we sometimes tried to use the number pad that wasn’t there, but we always got stuck. Asus does make laptops with a number pad built into the touchpad, but the one we used for this study did not have this feature. When it comes to the touchpad, it is big (5.12 x 3.5 inches) and made of glass. Even though we prefer to use a mouse with a gaming laptop, the touchpad was large and easy to move around on, whether I was using Windows 11 Home apps or playing games.

Asus ROG Strix G16: Battery Life

Asus ROG Strix G16 review

Since a while ago, Asus has been pushing for long battery life in gaming computers, and the Asus ROG Strix G16 is no different. The Strix lasted 8 hours and 49 minutes, which is almost the same as the Zephyrus G15 (8:48) and longer than the Katana 15 (2:48), the Legion 7i (5:02), and the average expensive gaming laptop (5:44).

Software and Warranty

Asus ROG Strix G16 review

The Armory Crate is the most important program on the Asus ROG Strix G16. It lets you change settings for the CPU, GPU, and fans. This is also where you can change how the keyboard lights up and make other changes for the display and macros. On the other hand, you can find information about your guarantee and system diagnostics in the MyASUS app.

You can expect to find junk like WhatsApp and Spotify in Windows 11. The ROG Strix G16 has a limited protection for one year. Check out how Asus did in our Tech Support Showdown and list of the Best and Worst Brands.

Final Words

Overall, the Asus ROG Strix G16 is a good gaming laptop that costs around $2,000 or less. The Gigabyte Aorus 15X, which costs just $100 more, is its best competitor. The Aorus 15X has a higher-quality screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600, but the ROG Strix G16 has a longer battery life by three hours.

In terms of speed, the Asus ROG Strix G16 is a great gaming laptop that continues to show off the power of Intel’s new Raptor Lake mobile processor and Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs. The laptop has a lot of other good points, like a solid build, RGB lighting that doesn’t go too far, and a comfy keyboard.

The ROG Strix G16 didn’t do great in our file transfer test, but it did well in the other efficiency tasks and came in second. Given the kind of hardware this laptop has, the 1920 x 1200 resolution is a bit of a bummer. However, customers can pay extra to update to 2560 x 1600. Asus also skimped on the speakers and camera. The lack of a webcam is a big deal in this age of working from home. Even with these flaws, the Asus ROG Strix G16 is a powerful 16-inch gaming PC with a nice look that you should consider buying.

FAQs

Why is ASUS ROG Strix so expensive?

Most of the time, ROG Strix cards are high-end products. I.e., RGB, a cool look, overclocking, and most importantly, a better cooling system to handle the tweaks. Because of this, the price of this card is more than the price of the Founders Edition you stated.

Is ASUS ROG Strix G15 fast?

Focused strength makes the ROG Strix G15/17’s core Windows 10 Pro gaming experience smoother and better. With up to a strong AMD RyzenTM 9 5900HX CPU and GeForce RTXTM 3070 GPU, everything is fast and smooth, from gaming to switching between tasks.
