Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 review (2023) a versatile device

Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 can improve the performance of your home network.

We’ve seen a few Wi-Fi 6 extenders and powerline kits, but most of them had the same problem: they could take your Wi-Fi network to the farthest corners of your home, but they couldn’t keep the same level of performance. Extenders like the TP-Link RE505x and the Netgear EAX12 couldn’t go faster than the entry-level AX1800 standard, and the Netgear Nighthawk X6S, the fastest extender we have tested, is now a relic of the Wi-Fi 5 era.

Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400: Description

The Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 is what you need. As the name suggests, this is Wi-Fi 6 all the way through, matching the fast AX5400 with up to 4.8Gbits/sec on the 5GHz band and 574Mbits/sec on the 2.4Ghz band. As long as you have a high-performance router, you should be able to connect to your network quickly wherever you need to.

Most extenders or repeaters are small units that plug directly into a wall socket, but the WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 is a separate box with its own 13W power supply. This isn’t as nice, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. You can move the repeater around if you can’t get a good signal from your router right next to the socket.

On the front, there’s a power indicator and a signal strength metre. On the back, there’s a WPS button and two Gigabit Ethernet ports that can be used to connect devices that don’t move around much, like a PC, smart TV, or games console. The repeater can also be used as an access point to bring Wi-Fi to a place with an Ethernet connection but no Wi-Fi already.

Design and Features

Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 review

Most wireless repeaters plug directly into a wall outlet, but this limits where they can be placed and can block other outlets. The Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 doesn’t have any trouble with that. It comes with a meter-long power cord, so you can stand it up on a desk or shelf to get the best signal strength and avoid obstacles. You can also easily use the two Gigabit Ethernet ports on the back, and the front has a light that shows how strong the signal is.

To set up the Repeater 5400, all you have to do is press the WPS button on your router and then the ADD button on the extender. This tells the repeater to take your current network settings and start sending them again, so your devices can automatically connect to the stronger signal.

On the other hand, you can use the web-based management interface to give the extended 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks your own names, set your own security settings, and look at a lot of technical settings. If you have more than one Devolo extender, you can put them all into mesh mode so that their settings are all the same. However, I found that one Repeater 5400 unit was enough to cover a three-bedroom maisonette.

Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400: Setup and Software

It’s important to have a strong Wi-Fi connection at home or at the office. You don’t want to have trouble with the internet all the time to stop you from getting things done every day. The more you work from home, the more important this becomes. There won’t be any IT guys to help you fix Wi-Fi problems like there would be in an office.

Because of this, it is important to have a strong system in place. In the long run, getting the right network devices can make a big difference. The Devolo Wi-Fi 6 Repeater 5400 is one of these devices, and we are going to look at it today. This device can work as a mesh satellite, an access point, or an extender.

It is a small, portable device that you can put anywhere in your home or office. This one also has a lot of configuration options and technical settings to help you get the most out of your Wi-Fi. But the best thing about this repeater is how easy it is to use, even though it has a lot of options.

In this review, we’ll look at this repeater in detail and try to explain why it’s so good. Aside from that, we’ll also talk about a few technical terms to help you understand what a mesh Wi-Fi system is and how it works. The Devolo Wi-Fi 6 Repeater is a simple gadget, so there isn’t much to see when you open the box.

It comes in a plain white box that proudly says “Devolo fixes weak Wi-Fi” on the front. There’s no doubt that this is some strong and brave marketing. On the front, you can also find information about the Mesh Wi-features, Fi’s warranty, and compatibility.

Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400: Performance

Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 review

To get the most out of the Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 and take advantage of its fast 5GHz band, you’ll need a high-end router. We used a Fritzbox 6690 Cable to test it. This cable also sends four MIMO streams on 5GHz with 160MHz channel bandwidth. We put the repeater in the middle of the distance between the router and a laptop with Wi-Fi 6 that was 20 metres from the Fritzbox. If you know more about this, you can visit official website.

We were very happy with how well the Wi-Fi 6 Repeater 5400 worked. The average data rate of 450Mbps (just over 56MBps) is great, and the fact that 5400 can use “crossband repeating” is part of the reason why. That means that instead of sending and receiving on the same 2.4GHz or 5GHz band, which slows down the maximum speed, crossband uses one band, say 2.4GHz, to talk to the router and another band, 5GHz, to talk to the device (in our case, the laptop), with no speed loss.

Final Words

Not everyone needs to see this kind of show. Something like the Mercusys ME30 will do a good job for a lot less money for everyday web tasks. The TP-Link RE700X is another option to think about. Its performance is on par with that of the Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400, but it costs less at £89.99.

But neither the Mercusys nor the TP-Link extender can match the Repeater 5400’s wide range of features or its easy-to-use design, which has two Ethernet ports and is all in one unit.

Is devolo any good?

But there’s no doubt that the Devolo Magic 2 kit works well for both wired and wireless connections, and that its flexible combination of Powerline and Wi-Fi networking can be very helpful for larger homes that usually have trouble getting a good Wi-Fi signal.

Does WiFi extender reduce speed?

But it has a big effect on how much bandwidth and how fast WiFi the client devices connected to the WiFi extender can use. It is as bad as going over 50% in a single jump (it means using a single extender).

Why is my Devolo slow?

Your Devolo powerline adapters might no longer work the way they should. For instance, you could lose your Internet connection or the speed of the transfer could slow down a lot. Most of the time, you can fix this by turning off and on the powerline adapters. A reset puts the adapters back to how they were when they were made.

Do WiFi extenders boost Mbps?

As you may know, a WiFi device’s speed slows down the farther it is from the WiFi access point or router. So, by placing WiFi Network Extenders around your home, you can make the distance between your WiFi devices and the WiFi signal shorter. This will make each device run faster and better.
