Gigabyte G5 review (2023): budget gaming laptop you can consider

most affordable gaming laptops

Since the price of graphics cards is what it is, gaming laptops like the Gigabyte G5 make a lot more sense. Believe it or not, this model is one of the least expensive ways to get a complete PC gaming system with Nvidia’s RTX ray tracing and DLSS features. You’re not getting the RTX 3080, the RTX 3070, or anything else from the history of the best graphics cards.

Gigabyte G5: Description

The G5’s low price goes both ways, so you get an RTX 3050 Ti GPU, which is so small that Nvidia hasn’t even made a desktop version. Still, that’s better than the bottom-of-the-line RTX 3050, and the Intel Core i5-11400H CPU is a good one with six cores. Features like 16GB of RAM and a 144Hz refresh rate on the 1080p screen show that the G5 is aiming higher than the entry level, but will it hit? Yes, they do pretty much.

First of all, Gigabyte made a smart decision to go for a simple design. While laptops with similar prices, like the Asus TUF Gaming F15 and Acer Nitro 5, try to look flashy, the G5 looks a lot more mature, with a simple all-black chassis and tasteful single-color backlighting. It still tries to hide the cost-cutting that goes into making any gaming laptop for less than £1,000, but it does so by making the build quality better instead of making the rainbow LEDs brighter.

Gigabyte G5 review: Design

Gigabyte G5 review

The Gigabyte G5 laptop is a simple one. The case doesn’t have any metal panels or RGB strips, and none of the fan grilles are very flashy. This laptop isn’t part of the high-end Aero or Aorus series, so even the Gigabyte logo on the lid is simple. If you want to see gamer style, look no further than the keyboard. It has a unique font and a backlight with RGB colours, but there is only one zone.

This means that the colour of the whole keyboard has to be the same. You also don’t have the whole rainbow to choose from; you only have 15 colours to choose from. But, really, these are the kinds of shades most people would use anyway. There is no “white,” but if you pick the colour that looks dark blue-grey, it’s basically off-white. The way a laptop looks is always a matter of taste, but I like the way the Gigabyte G5 looks better than one of its main competitors, the Acer Nitro 5.

Both the simple style and the mix of different textures work. All of the panels of the body are made of a matte plastic. The top of the device and the keyboard plate are very smooth, but the bottom has a rougher feel to it. The area below the keyboard is easy to get greasy fingerprints on, but the plastic feels dense, which makes you feel better about the Gigabyte G5’s build quality. For a “budget” gaming laptop, the other parts are well made.

When the Gigabyte G5 is closed and you press on the middle of the lid, it bends a little, but it’s not a big deal. What do you expect from a display with a plastic shell and a plastic screen? The keyboard doesn’t bend much, which suggests that there’s a solid sub-frame under the plastic surface on top.

Gigabyte G5 review: Display

Gigabyte G5 review

The Gigabyte G5 KC has a 15.6-inch IPS panel screen with a 1920×1080-pixel resolution and a refresh rate of 165 Hz. Our test field has the highest average maximum brightness, which is 275 cd/m2. Even so, 86% of the brightness is about average.

Also, no PWM is used to control the brightness, so users with sensitive eyes don’t have to worry about any problems. There is also a version of the gaming laptop with a 240 Hz panel, which is different from the one shown here.

Performance and features

The Gigabyte G5 gaming laptop comes with different parts, but the one we tested had an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU, a 10th-generation Intel Core i5-10500H processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of SSD storage. It’s a good gaming setup, but it’s not the best. It’s good if you want to play the newest games but don’t necessarily care about the highest frame rates.

When we ran the 3DMark Time Spy test, it got a score of 7,428. This is considered “good” by 3DMark, and it means you can play games like Battlefield V at almost 100 frames per second on a 1080p screen with the graphics settings at their highest. As a comparison, the average score on 3DMark for a gaming laptop is 5,730, while the average score for a gaming desktop PC is 9,216.

We played Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V, and Cyberpunk 2077 for a few hours, and without turning up the graphics settings to the max, we saw frame rates of between 40 and 80fps in all three games. This backs up what we’ve already said. Cyberpunk 2077 was the most demanding game, but the Gigabyte 5 could still get 30–40fps with graphics set to medium quality (and that includes ray-tracing).

You might not always be playing games on the Gigabyte G5, and having a full-size keyboard with a number pad is helpful for general computing. Typing on a laptop is fast and quiet, and we have no doubt that you could get a lot of work done if you had to. The trackpad isn’t that great—a it’s little small and flimsy—but it does the job, and if you need to, you can always attach a mouse.

We should also mention that this is more upgradable than the average gaming laptop. It has a spare M.2 SSD slot and a spare 2.5-inch drive bay, so you can easily add more storage. This gaming laptop’s battery can also be swapped out and replaced, which could make the laptop last longer.

As you might expect from a gaming laptop, the battery life isn’t all that great. When the screen brightness is at its highest, an hour of streaming video uses up 25% of the battery. When you’re playing games, the battery drains about four times as fast, so you’ll be lucky to get an hour of use between charges. So don’t think that you’ll be able to use the Gigabyte G5 for a long time without being near a power source.

Gigabyte G5 review: Battery Life

The Gigabyte G5 doesn’t seem to care much about battery life. It can hold 48.9Wh, which is fine for an Ultraportable but not enough for a gaming laptop. In PCMark 10’s Modern Office test, the Gigabyte G5 only lasted 2 hours and 44 minutes after turning on Windows 11’s Battery Saver in the default Performance profile. This is meant to look like regular tasks that office workers do.

It’s a pretty terrible outcome. I ran the test again using the Power Saving mode, which is a Gigabyte feature that can be accessed from one of the apps that came with the laptop. The Gigabyte G5 ran for 3 hours and 37 minutes. This is closer to the average battery life of a gaming laptop, which is 4-4.5 hours, but it is still not good.

But if you look at the Gigabyte G5 in the right way, this doesn’t have to be a deal-breaker. Most powerful gaming PCs, especially those with Intel CPUs, don’t have very good battery life. And it’s never fun to play games on battery power. You lose a lot of the GPU’s power, and even with a big battery, you can only play a game that is really hard for about 90 minutes.

Price and availability

Gigabyte G5 review

The Gigabyte G5 is now available to buy, and you can find it at most of the usual stores or Gigabyte’s official store. In the UK, these stores include Amazon and Currys. The widget at the bottom of this page should give you an idea of how much the laptop costs, but at the time this article was written, you could get it for somewhere between £800 and $900. But before you buy, you should double-check the specs and configuration to be sure you’re getting the model you want.

Final Words

The Gigabyte G5 is without a doubt one of the best gaming laptops out there in terms of value for money. You get a laptop that can run the best games, but not at the highest frame rates and most detailed graphics settings.

The 1080p screen resolution is part of the reason why the Gigabyte G5 can handle the best games out there. There are sharper and brighter screens out there, but it’s debatable whether a 15.6-inch screen needs 4K anyway. The screen on this gaming laptop is about the same as everything else on it: pretty good for the price, but not the best you can get.
