Kobo Plus review 2024: unlimited ebooks at low price

With Kobo Plus, you can read books on your Kobo tablet, computer, or cell phone.

Kobo Plus is fairly new to the market for reading subscriptions. It works the same way as Kindle Unlimited. It’s great for people with Kobo ereaders, but at the time of writing, there aren’t many ways to get it. Amazon’s ebook membership service and Rakuten’s Kobo Plus are different in some important ways. First of all, Kobo Plus doesn’t have any limits like Kindle Unlimited, which lets you “borrow” up to 10 books from its library of over a million titles.

You can download as many titles from the whole library as you want at once, and you don’t have to “return” any to add more at a later time. Still, you won’t “own” the files because you don’t buy them outright. If you end your membership, you won’t be able to read the books you have already downloaded.

Kobo Plus: Pricing

Kobo Plus is only available in a few places, while a lot more people use Kindle Unlimited. It was first sold in Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal in the year 2020. Australia and New Zealand got it in 2021. As of April 2023, it has spread to both the U.S. and the U.K.

With this growth, Kobo’s subscription service is now divided into three levels: Kobo Plus Read is just for ebooks, Kobo Plus Listen is just for audiobooks, and Kobo Plus Full gives you access to both ebooks and audiobooks.

You can only get these three tiers in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, and they cost:

  • Kobo Plus Read costs is $7.99, £8.99, or CA$12.99.$9.99 / AU$13.99
  • Kobo Plus Listen costs $7.99, £8.99, or $12.99 CAD.$9.99 / AU$13.99
  • Kobo Plus costs is $9.99, £11.99, CAD$12.99, or AU$16.99

In New Zealand, Kobo Plus is still mostly a $14.99-a-month ebook membership service. The only plan that lets you listen to books is NZ$13.99, and there is no way to sign up for a plan that lets you read and listen. But as of August 2023, Australia’s Kobo Plus had both the Read and Listen options, so it’s likely that New Zealand will soon have both as well.

This table of specifications focuses on the most important aspects of the service. Users have access to a broad variety of eBooks and audiobooks when the library that they utilize is large enough. The subscription is available on a variety of different devices and provides unlimited reading.

Kobo Plus: Library

Kobo Plus has a lot of romance, thriller, mystery, science fiction, and fantasy ebooks, just like other subscription services. These are examples of genre literature, which is known to be a mainstay of this type of business. It could be because people tend to read genre fiction quickly, which makes a membership service appealing to these readers. If you read a lot of science fiction, fantasy, or horror, this eReader would be perfect for you.

Even though genre fiction is its mainstay, it also has modern or general fiction, Kobo Editions of classics, comics, manga, visual novels, biographies, memoirs, and Kobo Originals. These are in lists, so if you want to look at ebooks in a certain area, it’s easy to do. When it comes to audiobooks, there are romances, fantasies, science fiction, mysteries, thrillers, nonfiction, biographies, diaries, and even some books for children, though the selection is very small right now. I was surprised to learn that the library also has some comics, manga, or graphic books in audiobook form.

Like the Kindle, the Kobo Plus has a lot of books that usually cost between $0.99 and $2.99 CAD. You don’t usually find many best-sellers through the program, but if you are a determined reader who reads quickly, that might not matter. There are some more niche books that, based on the niche, would be very expensive to buy, so it is worth looking through the catalogue to see if any of your interests are there.

How does it work?

Like Kindle Unlimited, it is a service you pay for each month and can use to read as many books as you want from the Kobo Plus library. It is important to know that the Kobo Plus catalog is not the same as the full Kobo catalog. If you don’t like keeping your WiFi connection on, you can do a lot of reading without it. From what Kobo says,

Once you’ve opened 15 Kobo Plus books or hit the end of your 30-day offline reading period, you’ll need to connect to Wi-Fi and sync your Kobo eReader to keep reading. After you unplug, you’ll be able to open up to 15 books again over the next 30 days. If you cancel your subscription, you won’t be able to read the books you got through Kobo Plus anymore (unless you buy them again).

Kobo Plus: User Experience

Kobo Plus

You can sign up for Kobo Plus on your computer, on your phone, or on a Kobo ereader. During our tests, the best way to use Kobo Plus generally was through the app. However, this was only because it’s hard to find your next book on a Kobo ereader. But you can use it on Kobo devices, which makes it a lot more appealing than Scribd, which doesn’t work on ereaders.

On the other hand, it has a huge and varied library with podcasts, videos, sheet music, and more, which you won’t find on any other ebook subscription service. The subscription service is easy to find on the top of the Kobo app for smartphones and tablets, just like it is on the Kobo website. On the home screen of a Kobo ereader, you can find it under the Discover tab.

Who is it for?

People who already have a Kobo ereader can use Kobo Plus. Think of it as a service that goes along with the Kobo shop. It’s for bookworms who aren’t picky about what they read and don’t have a specific title in mind. As long as they get their fantasy, science fiction, or romance fix, they don’t care about the titles or writers.

On the other hand, it is not for people who want bestsellers, new books, or books by well-known authors. If something comes out today, tomorrow, or next week, you probably won’t find it here.

Kobo Plus: Pros and Cons

  • Seamless reading experience
  • Subscription price is cheaper
  • Truly unlimited

  • Few Kobo devices that can play audiobooks
  • Limited to select countries

Final Words

Kobo Plus is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy reading and want to read a wide selection of books without having to invest a significant amount of money. Because new books and media are added on a regular basis to the collection, the library is likely to have something that will pique your interest. In addition, you will have the opportunity to test it out for free before deciding whether or not to purchase a subscription.
