Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 review (2023) with great features

a moderate improvement over its predecessor

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 does a great job as a light laptop for surfing the web and typing. It only weighs 1.1 kg, but because it’s made of strong aluminum and polycarbonate composite resin, it doesn’t bend when you touch it. The keys on the keyboard move in a satisfying way, and once the fingerprint login is set up, it works very quickly.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2: Description

The problem is that the screen resolution is lower than average. With a resolution of 1536×1024, instead of the usual 1080p, users who want to use it for graphic design will be disappointed, and the webcam’s resolution of 720p is just average for a cheap laptop, making it less suitable for Zoom calls than many of its competitors.

The Surface Laptop Go 2 is also better for the environment. At a time when tech is being thrown away at an alarming rate, the Surface Laptop Go 2 has more replaceable parts than its predecessors. Parts can be easily switched out which means it can be upgraded and fixed much more easily than a typical laptop. All of the PCs, interactive whiteboards, and tablets in Microsoft’s Surface Series have touchscreens. Since it was first released in 2012, the range has grown to cover a wide range of users.

Pros and Cons

  • The design is small and light.
  • Battery life is good
  • Touchscreen display of high quality

  • There are only two ports, one USB-C and one USB-A.
  • No help for Thunderbolt 3

Design and Features

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 review

The Laptop Go 2’s appeal comes from the fact that it has a low price, is well made, and looks great. It’s a beautifully made laptop. The lid and keyboard deck are made of smooth, matte-finished aluminum, and there aren’t many decorations on it, giving it a high-end look. The base is made of light grey plastic, but it’s strong and, again, doesn’t have much going on. The whole thing weighs 1.1kg and is only 278 x 206 x 15.7mm, which makes it light enough to carry around all day.

When you open the lid, you’ll find more treats inside. One smooth part is the way the hinge works. It closes and opens with a velvety softness that is very satisfying, and both the keyboard and touchpad are beautiful. The only thing that isn’t great about it is that the keyboard doesn’t have a backlight.

Still, there is not much in the way of physical connections, which is disappointing, but I think most people could get by with what’s there: one USB-C port, one USB-A port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a Surface Connect charging port on the left edge, and one on the right edge. The power brick doesn’t have an extra USB port like it does on other Surface devices.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2: Screen

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 review

When the first Surface Laptop Go came out in 2020, the screen was its weakest point, and Microsoft hasn’t done anything to fix it. With a resolution of 1536 x 1024, this laptop has one of the lowest pixel densities you’re likely to find. This means that images aren’t as clear as they are on Full HD and better screens. The tall 3:2 aspect ratio works better for web pages and documents than for video, so this is not a good companion for Netflix and Disney Plus.

Our Planet on the Surface Laptop Go 2, so it’s fine if you don’t mind images that are too clear. My colorimeter also showed that the picture quality was good, with a contrast ratio of 1095:1 that made sure lighter colors still stood out well against dark backgrounds. The maximum brightness of 395 nits will also help you work in bright places, whether you’re in the office or outside.

Even the sRGB color coverage is good at 92.1%, so watching videos and looking at photos won’t cause any noticeable distortion. It’s not quite good enough for serious photo and video editing because it doesn’t show colors as accurately as a professional would, but the Surface Laptop Go 2 was never meant for such heavy work.

Microsoft has also kept the touchscreen, which lets you pinch the screen to zoom in on a picture or swipe it to move down a news feed. It doesn’t work with a stylus, which means that Microsoft’s Surface Pen won’t work with it.

Keyboard and trackpad

Even though the Surface Laptop Go 2 is smaller than most laptops, it still has room for a full-size keyboard. It goes almost all the way to the edges of the device, which makes it easy to type.

The fact that there is a bright light bar around the fingerprint sensor makes it even stranger. The usual brightness and volume controls are on the top row, as well as a play/pause button and shortcuts to search and Settings.

Even though the device is small, there is still plenty of room on either side of the trackpad to rest your palms. This has the same soft-touch material as the keys, but you can’t choose an Alcantara finish for this. Still, the trackpad is responsive and easy to use in a very good way. It’s satisfying to click, but you can still move around with precision. You could still connect an external mouse, but you don’t have to.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2: Performance

You can’t say that Microsoft exaggerates the Surface Laptop Go 2’s performance, because its website just says that it has “performance to run everyday apps.” The 11th-generation Core i5 processor gets scores of 1345 and 4140 in the Geekbench 5 CPU benchmark, which is a good way to measure its performance. Apple’s current M1-based MacBook Air on the other hand, gets scores of 1730 and 7590.

It won’t be able to do much video editing or gaming, though. The PCMark 10 video test gave it a score of 4341, and the 3DMark Night Raid gaming test gave it a score of 10,820, which puts it firmly in the “less than 20fps” category. The Surface Laptop Go 2’s battery life is the only thing that really lets it down.

Microsoft says that a “typical device use” can last up to 13.5 hours, but our review unit only lasted half that long when we streamed a video. Even with the screen brightness turned down to 50%, it only lasted 6 hours and 40 minutes. You might be able to get a full eight-hour work day out of that if you don’t use Wi-Fi all day, but that’s still nowhere near as long as the M1 MacBook Air’s 17 hours.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2: Battery Life

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 review

A new chip doesn’t just make the Surface Laptop Go 2 run faster; it can also make the battery last longer, which is exactly what has happened. The Surface Laptop Go 2 was able to last for 9 hours and 11 minutes when the brightness was turned down to 150 nits and 10 battery benchmark was used to simulate normal use.

In the same test, the first Surface Laptop Go lasted for 8 hours and 44 minutes. That only gives you a 30-minute boost, but I’m not going to complain. But it’s important to point out that other laptops, like the Acer Swift 3, can last even longer on a single charge.

Final Words

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 is a great little computer that costs very little. It’s powerful enough to be your main computer, small and light enough to carry around in a bag all day, has a great screen, and is made very well.

The only problem is that at £629 and £729, the higher-end models don’t seem to be as good a deal. For $529, however, the cheapest Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 is a great deal and, pound for pound, the best budget laptop you can buy right now.

Is Surface Go 2 better than Chromebook?

The Surface is better for watching videos and movies because its screen has a higher resolution, gets brighter, and has a wider range of colors that are much more true. Also, it’s easier to carry around and feels better made. It has a backlit keyboard and a webcam and microphone that work better.

Is Surface Laptop 2 good for students?

Surface Go 2 Laptop. The updated midrange model from Microsoft is a top choice for students and a cheaper alternative to the MacBook, but its battery leaves a lot to be desired. Sleek and luxurious design.
