MSI Modern 15 review (2023) a solid laptop for office use

The MSI Modern 15 is an affordable notebook that offers enough performance and storage for hard work.

MSI is really trying to get the word out about the artists who help make their laptops. In this case, the company decided to work with Lorraine Sorlet, who has nothing to do with how well the device works. But she has made some really “graceful” art that will look great with your MSI Modern 15 you can buy this laptop directly from MSI’s official store.

MSI Modern 15: Description

We nerds, on the other hand, care more about numbers, scores, and results. Let’s start with the first one, which is up to Core i7-1255U, which has 2 P-cores and 8 E-cores. This is one of the newest ULV processors from Intel, and it should really shake up the mobile force. When you take the device out of the box, there are no bells and whistles.

It looks very calm, and the only colour option is “Classic Black,” which is more than enough. The Modern 15 is pretty thin and light, with a thickness of 19.9 mm and a weight of 1.70 kg. Also, even though both the body and the lid are made of plastic, it is surprisingly stiff.

MSI Modern 15 review

MSI says that the Modern 15 laptop is “ultra-slim” and “ultra-light.” But that may be a stretch, since it’s 20mm thick and weighs 1.7kg. For a gaming laptop, that’s thin and light, but for a regular one like this? Not at all. But I think MSI’s approach to this “ordinary” style is just right. This laptop is made entirely of plastic, but I don’t think it looks much less sleek than the much more expensive MSI Summit E16 Flip Evo.

The keyboard plate and the lid are both made of smooth black plastic. This can sometimes feel cheap, but it doesn’t here because the finish is almost soft. The screen and bottom half are also very sturdy, which is great. There is only one USB-C port on the MSI Modern 15. There are also two very slow USB 2.0 ports, which can be used to connect a mouse and keyboard for a desktop-style setup but not external storage.

It seems stingy to only have two connections that are moderately fast. On the left side is an HDMI port that makes it easy to connect a TV or monitor, but again, it’s not a very good connector. It can only output up to 4K/30, which means it’s an HDMI 1.4 port and not the much better HDMI 2.0 or 2.1. It also has a microSD slot.

The 720p webcam is on the MSI Modern 15. This year, a lot of companies have started upgrading to 1080p, but that wasn’t going to happen on a cheap laptop like this one. The image is very soft and loses colour when the lighting isn’t great. But I’ve seen worse in laptops that cost a lot more money. Noise handling in poor lighting is solid. As expected, the speakers aren’t very good. There isn’t much bass, and the maximum volume isn’t very loud.

MSI Modern 15: Screen & Battery

MSI Modern 15 review

With a 19201080 IPS display, the Modern 15 feels a little out of date when it comes to resolution. It’s 2021, and we’d like to see higher resolution displays or maybe even OLED. The laptop lost 15% of its power overnight with the lid closed, and the battery only lasted about 4 hours and 30 minutes. I wouldn’t take this laptop on a long trip, but if you want to watch Netflix while it’s plugged in, it’s not bad. Just buy some headphones.

MSI Modern 15: Performance

MSI Modern 15 review

With an Nvidia GeForce MX450 and an 11th-generation Intel Core i7 quad-core Tiger Lake processor, there is plenty of performance for everyone. There are also the powerful Intel XE graphics, so the MX450 doesn’t make sense, especially since there is a thunderbolt port to add an EGPU. Now, the machine is not a gaming notebook, but it can play esports games on low to medium settings if you want to game between zoom meetings.

We found it strange that our unit’s fans would start spinning up at random during bootup and shutdown, but we couldn’t make this happen every time. With an extra m.2 slot, the memory and storage can be upgraded, and since the memory isn’t soldered, it can be upgraded to 64GB using the 2 SO-DIMM slots. I want to say that I like that the ram is easy to get to and not hidden under the keyboard.

Final Words

The MSI Modern 15 is a cheap laptop that has enough power and storage to do hard work. A Dell XPS 13 with the same insides but twice the price costs twice as much. And unlike many basic, practical laptops, the MSI Modern 15 has a low-key style; it doesn’t look or feel too cheap at first glance.

There are a few things, though, that a lower price can’t beat. The colour saturation on this laptop isn’t very good. Considering how bad the colours are, the screen looks pretty good, but photo editors and video makers should think about whether this is too much of a problem to work around.

Is MSI Modern 15 good for gaming?

The Modern 15 got a score of 4,923 on the PCMark 10 Benchmark test. We haven’t benchmarked any games on the MSI Modern 15 B12M because it’s not a gaming laptop. The hardware can run games at low resolutions and low quality settings.

Is MSI Prestige 15 a good laptop?

The MSI Prestige 15 A12UD-093 looks like it was made for graphics-intensive work. Its 4K display with AdobeRGB shows detailed images with the most true-to-life colours, so high-quality digital photos can be viewed, edited, and optimised without a separate monitor.
