Rokid Max review (2023) affordable AR glasses with great features

lightweight and comfortable

That product was the Rokid Vision. Even though it was a bit big, it was a working prototype that did what Rokid said it would do: it projected images in front of my face, making them look like they were floating. Tech moves quickly in Shenzhen. Since then, that prototype has gotten smaller and lighter, and it is now a real product that people can buy all over the world. The Rokid Max, the newest and latest version, just came out, and I got to try a pair.

Rokid Max: Description

The Rokid Max glasses are light (75g/2.6oz) and have two Micro-OLED screens inside that show images to the person who is wearing them. The screens are not pointed directly at the eyes. Instead, they are pointed down and reflect light back to the wearer’s line of sight through a complicated system called “bird bath optics.” This helps a lot with eye strain, and TUV Rheinland has certified that the Rokid Max is safe for the eyes.

The images that come out are like looking at a 215-inch screen from 20 feet away. This means that the screen is big enough to make you feel like you’re in the games, but not so big that you feel like you’re sitting in the front row of a movie theatre. The glasses don’t have any storage or batteries on their own. Instead, they need to be plugged into a smart device like a smartphone, tablet, computer, or Nintendo Switch Games.

Rokid Max: Design

Rokid Max review

The Rokid Max glasses have a pair of Micro-OLED displays in each eye. When plugged into a device like a smartphone or laptop, the displays can project images that look like a floating screen in front of the wearer’s eyes. The Max is Rokid’s second-generation product after the Rokid Air, which came out in 2021. It joins a market that is getting more and more crowded with consumer-grade AR glasses from companies like Lenovo, TCL, and nReal.

We have tried the latest AR glasses from the brands listed above, and Rokid Max is better in a number of ways. First, at 75g, they are the lightest AR glasses that have ever been made. When you measure from the front of the glasses to the part that touches your face, they are also the thinnest. The Max also has diopters that can be changed. People who are nearsighted can turn the dial at the top of each display to change their vision from 0.00D to -6.00D.

We can see well enough that we don’t need glasses, so we didn’t need them. But my friend who is nearsighted tried it and said she could change the way things looked, so she didn’t need contacts to see well. There is a directional speaker system on the top and bottom of each arm, which pumps out fuller sound than the same speakers on nReal Air, TCL NXTWEAR S, or Rokid’s old glasses. Of course, you’ll still want to use wireless earbuds if you want to be completely immersed.

Rokid Max: Features

Rokid Max review

Rokid Max is a smart speaker that is powered by AI and has a built-in 10-inch touchscreen display. It can be used for entertainment and smart home tasks. The device has eight far-field microphones that let it understand voice commands and respond to user requests from a distance, even in noisy places. Users can easily use their voices to control smart home devices like lights, thermostats, and security cameras that are compatible with Rokid Max.

The device also has a camera built in that can be used for video calls or to keep an eye on a room from afar. Users can watch movies, surf the web, and use a variety of streaming services, like Netflix and YouTube, on the 10-inch HD screen. Rokid Max has an Octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM, which make it run smoothly and quickly.

The device also comes with 32GB of storage that can be expanded with a microSD card up to 256GB. Overall, Rokid Max is a powerful and flexible smart speaker that can be used for a wide range of entertainment and smart home tasks.

Rokid Max: Software

Rokid made a companion app for the glasses, which is only available for Android right now (but Rokid has said that an iOS version is on the way). The app will launch an AR platform that looks like the home screen of an iPhone or iPad in landscape mode. Here, you can open different apps that can be shown in the virtual space. You can “map” these to different parts of your field of vision.

For example, you could put Instagram in the upper left corner, a web browser below it, and a Twitter feed on the right. You can move some of these windows farther away or closer to you, and the space seems to go on forever. The glasses have sensors for 3DoF (three degrees of freedom) head tracking, so you can even ‘look around’ by turning your head if you want to place more windows outside of your direct field of vision.

The experience is neat, but it could be better. You use your phone’s screen as a touchpad to control the user interface, but there is a small but noticeable delay between what you do on the touchpad and what you see on the screen. And right now, most of the apps are pretty simple. Most platforms, like Instagram, Tik-Tok, and YouTube, require you to sign in to the website in a web browser and keep going from there. It would be much better if there were apps made just for that.

Rokid Max: Performance

Rokid Max review

The Rokid Max smart speaker is made so that the user experience is smooth and quick. It has an Octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM, which allow it to run multiple apps and handle complex tasks quickly and without lagging. The device has 32GB of storage built in, and a microSD card can be used to add up to 256GB more. This means that a lot of media, like music, photos, and videos, can be stored on the device and is easy to get to.

It’s great for watching movies, surfing the web, and using apps because the 10-inch HD screen shows images that are clear and sharp. The eight far-field microphones are very sensitive and work well, so the device can hear voice commands even when there is a lot of noise around. Overall, the Rokid Max works well and has a lot of features that make it a good choice for people who want a smart speaker with a display built in.

Final Words

The Rokid Max smart speaker is a powerful and flexible device with a variety of features for entertainment and smart home control. The Rokid Max is easy to use because it has a 10-inch touchscreen display, eight far-field microphones, and a powerful Octa-core processor.

The device also has a built-in camera for video calls and remote room monitoring, which makes it a convenient all-in-one solution. Even though it’s not as well-known as some other smart speakers on the market, the Rokid Max is a good choice for people who want a smart speaker with a built-in display and a variety of features.
