Apple HomePod 2 vs HomePod 2024: Review, Specs and Features

It’s been a long time since Apple first released the (now defunct) HomePod, but the old smart speaker has been brought back to life. The second-generation HomePod costs $299, and it has a lot of improvements over the first-generation model. Not only does it sound better than its older sibling, but it also has a lot of other improvements that make it much better.

Here’s a closer look at all the ways the original HomePod and the HomePod 2023 are different and the ways they are the same. When you look at the two HomePods side by side, you won’t be able to tell them apart by much.

The new HomePod is about 200 grammes lighter and a few millimeters shorter than the first one, but otherwise, they are very similar. The touchpad on top of the HomePod 2023 is also a bit bigger and now goes almost all the way to the edge of the device. Aside from these small differences, they are both long and come in different colours.

Price and availability

In a move that is very unlike Apple, the new HomePod costs less than the first one. The first HomePod sold for £319/$349/AU$499, while the second one costs £299/$299/AU$479. Even though the money saved won’t make a huge difference in your life, it’s still nice to have. It is, however, a lot more expensive than the HomePod Mini, which costs £99/$99/AU$149, even though the two products are very different.

Apple HomePod 2 vs HomePod Design

The second-generation HomePod doesn’t have a completely new look. Instead, Apple made small changes all over. On the top of the cylinder-shaped speaker, the backlit touch screen now goes all the way to the edge. The rest of the visible surface area of the device is wrapped in fabric mesh, which Apple has again made from 100% recycled materials. Even the power cord, which is now made to look like woven fabric, has the same look. It’s also not removable, so you can switch it out for a longer one if you want to put the HomePod 2 far away from an outlet.

If you plan to use both the original HomePod and the HomePod 2 in different rooms, the fact that they look similar is a nice touch. The HomePod 2 is 6.6 inches tall, 5.6 inches wide, and weighs 2.3kg. This makes it just a little bit shorter and 200g lighter than the first one. We think the new HomePod is lighter because it doesn’t have as many tweeters as the old one. More on that later.

Apple HomePod 2 vs HomePod Features

Matter is the tech to watch in 2023, and Apple made sure that the new HomePod supports the interoperability standard. That means you’ll be able to connect your HomePod to anything else that supports Matter, which is a list that keeps growing every week. Like the one that is going away, this one also works with Siri.

You can tell it to do a lot of different things, and since it has four strong microphones, it will hear your commands loud and clear. It can also listen to smoke or CO alarms and send alerts to your smartphone. The HomePod also has a temperature and humidity sensor, just like the cheaper HomePod mini. The HomePod 2023 also supports Ultra Wideband, which makes it possible for it to find and quickly sync with the rest of your smart home.

Apple HomePod 2 vs HomePod Audio quality

Apple HomePod 2 vs HomePod

In our first review of the Apple HomePod, we said it had great sound and was one of the best smart speakers out there. When I first heard the Apple HomePod 2, it was also impressive. It had clear bass, crisp highs, and clear vocals.

Both speakers are good at what they do because they have adaptive audio. This means that they use their microphones to listen for echoes so they can “map” the room with sound. The HomePod then uses this information to adjust the sound coming out of the speakers to make it work best in that room. It’s the same system that’s used in other high-end smart speakers, but with the Sonos One SL, you have to set things up by hand.

If you have an Apple TV 4K, you can also connect your HomePod (1st or 2nd generation) or HomePod mini to it and use it as the audio output for whatever you’re watching. You can also put together two HomePods to make a stereo pair. But if you have a first-generation HomePod and think that all you need is a second-generation model, you’re out of luck. You can only make a stereo pair with two HomePods from the same generation. You can’t mix and match.

Which one should you consider?

This is a particularly easy conclusion to come to: the HomePod 2 is the original, excellent HomePod made even better. It’s cheaper, smarter, has better compatibility, and it sounds much clearer, cleaner and more exciting.

With its upgraded smart integration and even better audio performance, the HomePod has made a triumphant return, admirably filling the full-sized-smart-speaker-shaped hole that’s been in Apple’s lineup for nearly two years now. Buy with confidence.

But what if you already own the original? Should you scrap the old model and splash out on a HomePod 2? To be honest, we wouldn’t be in a major hurry to upgrade (unless you really want to, of course). Yes, the new model sounds better and offers some new smarts that might appeal to some people, but the original is still a very good wireless speaker.

Is HomePod 2 better?

This is a very easy thing to figure out: the HomePod 2 is just the excellent original HomePod made even better. It costs less, is smarter, works with more devices, and sounds much clearer, cleaner, and more exciting.

Is HomePod 2 better than HomePod 1?

The second-generation HomePod costs $299, and it has a lot of improvements over the first-generation model. Not only does it sound better than its older sibling, but it also has a lot of other improvements that make it much better.

What is the difference between HomePod gen1 and gen2?

The first-generation Apple HomePod is a better speaker than the second-generation Sonos One. The sound profile of the Apple is better balanced, and there are fewer compression artefacts at the highest volume. Its Siri voice assistant can better understand what you say, even if you are in a noisy place.

Why did Apple stop selling HomePod?

When the HomePod finally came out, Siri didn’t do as well as Alexa or Google Assistant, and reviewers didn’t like how tied the smart speaker was to Apple’s ecosystem. Even though the HomePod’s price dropped by $50 in 2019, it was taken off the market in 2021.
