Garmin has been a well-known company for a long time when it comes to running watches. The Garmin Forerunner 255 and Forerunner 265 are two of their most popular products, and fitness fans have paid a lot of attention to them. In this article, we’ll look at the differences between these two models and help you decide which one is best for your running needs.

Let’s take a moment to learn about the Garmin Forerunner series before we get into the details. The Forerunner series has become a go-to choice for athletes and casual runners alike because of how well it tracks fitness, how well it measures performance, and how durable it is.

Garmin Forerunner 255 vs Forerunner 265: Price and availability

The Forerunner 265 came out on March 2, 2023, so it is the more recent of the two watches. The Forerunner 265 costs $449/£429 and comes in two versions: the Forerunner 265, which has a 1.3-inch screen, and the Forerunner 265S, which has a 1.1-inch screen. The watch is now available from both Garmin and other retailers.

Both sizes of the Garmin Forerunner 255 cost the same. Both the Forerunner 255S and 255 measure 1.1 inches and 1.3 inches, respectively. You don’t have to store any music on the Forerunner 255. Without music, the Forerunner 255 costs $349, while the Forerunner 255 Music is £349. Now that the newer watch has come out, the Forerunner 255 is likely to go on sale.

Garmin Forerunner 255 vs Forerunner 265: Design and Display

Garmin Forerunner 255 vs Forerunner 265

Both the Garmin Forerunner 255 and the Forerunner 265 look sporty and sleek in terms of their design and screen. They have a round face and a strong design that makes them good for working out and being outside. But there are a few important differences that you should know about. The 1.2-inch transflective display on the Garmin Forerunner 255 makes it easy to see even in bright sunlight. The screen’s resolution is clear and sharp, so data and alerts are easy to read. It also has five physical buttons around the bezel that let you move through the menus and functions quickly and easily.

On the other hand, the Garmin Forerunner 265 has a 1.4-inch display that is slightly bigger and gives a more open and immersive viewing experience. The resolution of the screen is also very good, so images are clear and sharp. The Forerunner 265 also has physical buttons that make it easy to navigate and get to different features and settings. Both models have Garmin’s Chroma Display technology, which makes the screen easier to see and read in a variety of lighting situations. They also have backlight settings that can be changed, so users can change the brightness to suit their needs.

The Forerunner 255 and Forerunner 265 are both comfortable and safe to wear on the wrist because of how they are made. They come with different bands, so people can change the way their watches look and feel. Both models are also water-resistant, so you can swim and do other water-based activities with them.

Garmin Forerunner 255 vs Forerunner 265: Features

The Garmin Forerunner 255 is one of the best running watches on the market because it has a lot of great features. The Forerunner 255 is a great device for runners who want a device that can do a lot of things. It has accurate GPS tracking, a lot of fitness tracking features, and a long battery life.

On the other hand, the Garmin Forerunner 265 has a few features that are a little bit different and might interest some athletes. With its advanced running dynamics and additional training metrics, the Forerunner 265 gives you a more complete picture of how you’re doing, which is why serious runners should think about getting it.

Garmin Forerunner 255 vs Forerunner 265: Software

The MIP display on the Garmin Forerunner 255 helps it last a long time on a single charge. It’s the main reason why Garmin has kept using the technology for so long, even though most smartwatches with bright AMOLED screens only last a day per charge. So don’t be surprised that the Forerunner 265 goes backwards in order to improve the quality of its pictures.

The raw numbers from Garmin are shown above. WE have found that both watches run out of power a little faster than Garmin says they will, but they are still better than almost every other running watch we have tried. The main things to consider when choosing a Forerunner watch are (A) whether you want a larger or smaller model and (B) whether you want to run with a specific tracking mode or music streaming.

The Forerunner 255S has a smaller battery, which is clear from the fact that its numbers are lower than those of the larger 255. There’s no doubt that the smaller size is partly to blame. But the Forerunner 265S is more efficient than the 265 because its AMOLED is smaller and uses less power, and because it’s the same thickness and can fit a bigger battery.

Concerning the second point, the Forerunner 255 is the clear winner if you only use it for GPS tracking or passive health monitoring. But when you use ultra-precise multi-band tracking, the gap goes from 10 hours to just 2 hours. If you add in streaming music or SpO2 monitoring all day, there isn’t much difference between the two.

Garmin Forerunner 255 vs Forerunner 265: Battery life

Garmin Forerunner 255 vs Forerunner 265

Of course, the bigger the drain on the battery, the brighter the screen. Still, the battery life of the two watches isn’t that different. The 265S has a battery life of 15 days in smartwatch mode and 24 hours in GPS mode. In smartwatch mode, the 265 lasts 13 days, and in GPS mode, it lasts 20 hours. Usually, the bigger watch has a longer battery life, but it looks like the larger 265 will need charging a little bit sooner because its screen is bigger and brighter.

The Forerunner 255, on the other hand, can be used as a smartwatch for 14 days and as a GPS device for 30 hours without music or 6.5 hours with music. In smartwatch mode, the Forerunner 255S lasts 12 days, in GPS mode without music it lasts 26 hours, and in GPS mode with music it lasts 5.5 hours.

When the newer, brighter watch is set to GPS mode, the battery seems to run out faster than on the older watch. Even though 13–15 days is still a lot longer than some of the best smartwatches on the market (looking at you, Apple Watch Series 8), the Forerunner 255 is the better choice if you want a watch you don’t have to charge.

Forerunner 265: Pros and Cons

  • Accurate GPS and GLONASS tracking
  • Advanced training features
  • Heart rate monitoring
  • Pulse oximeter for blood oxygen saturation measurement
  • Activity and sleep tracking
  • Smart notifications and music control

  • Battery life may be limited during GPS use

Which one should you consider?

The FR265 is definitely better than the FR255. The display gives it a high-end feel that makes it hard for a MIP-packing watch to really compete. There’s really no comparison, unless you don’t like brighter displays. The battery life is still long enough to get you through multiple days of normal use or a very long race day, and it comes with better training features (for now).

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think about the FR255, though. As we’ve already said, it’s still a great running watch with almost the same experience on paper. At a lower price, it might be a better fit for your budget, especially if you don’t care too much about the change in display quality or support for music you can listen to offline.

What is the difference between Garmin Forerunner 255 and 265?

The Forerunner 255 has a memory-in-pixel screen, while the Forerunner 265 has an AMOLED touchscreen that is much brighter, especially indoors or when there are clouds or trees in the way.

Is Garmin 255 worth upgrade?

If you are a triathlete or plan to become one, you should get the Garmin Forerunner 255/255s instead of the older model. Aside from that, the Forerunner 255 has a few extra premium features and some small hardware upgrades.
