MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5 2024: review and compare

In the never-ending war between Apple and Microsoft, a new battle has started this year with the release of the MacBook Air M2 and Surface Laptop 5. Both have very sleek designs, a lot of power under the hood, and (at least in the case of the MacBook Air) battery life that keeps them on the battlefield for hours.

In our last MacBook Air M1 vs Surface Laptop 4 matchup, Apple’s nearly perfect laptop won, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft’s great ultra-thin laptop went down without a fight. In this year’s fight, Apple used an upgraded M2 silicon chip as its trump card. It even delivered a revamped design with a bigger screen and smaller bezels. But Microsoft has a trick up its sleeve: the Surface Laptop 5 now has a fast 12th Gen Intel processor, which gives it an edge.

The Surface Laptop 5 will soon be on people’s doorsteps. Shipments will start on October 25. It was announced at the Microsoft Surface October event. We haven’t looked at Microsoft’s newest product yet, so stay tuned for a full review of the Surface Laptop 5. In the meantime, check out how these two small, powerful devices are different.

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5 Design

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5

In terms of design, the MacBook Air M2 and the Surface Laptop 5 have a lot in common. Both are slim, stylish, and light. This year, though, Apple changed the design of the Air to make it look more like the MacBook Pro 14. It also gave the MacBook Pro 14, the Surface Laptop 5, and the MacBook Air more color options. It also came in Silver, Space Gray, Starlight, Midnight, and Midnight.

The MacBook Air M2 is the most ultraportable laptop you can get. It is 12 by 8.5 by 0.4 inches and weighs a few pounds. The 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 5 is a little bit bigger and heavier. It measures 12.1 x 8.8 x 0.57 inches and weighs 2.8 pounds. The 15-inch model is even bigger, measuring 13.4 by 9.6 by 0.58 inches and weighing 3.4 pounds.

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5 USB-A ports

Both laptops have a fairly small number of ports. The MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a MagSafe 3 charging port. The Surface Laptop 5 also has a USB-C port with Thunderbolt 4 support, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a Surface Connect port, and a USB-A 3.1 port.

Even though it may seem like a small difference, the USB-A port is useful for people who still use wired mice and keyboards. Many new laptops are getting rid of their USB-A ports in favor of USB-C, which has better connectivity and a higher data transfer rate. However, this could make it harder to connect older devices or USB sticks.

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5 Display

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5

Displays are a key part of any good laptop, and both the MacBook Air M2 and the Surface Laptop 5 have amazing ones. We will see the same 13.5-inch PixelSense touchscreen (2256 x 1504) with 10-point multi-touch, but with Dolby Vision IQ support. But the 15-inch model is a little different. It has a 15-inch PixelSense touchscreen (2496 x 1664) instead of the 2256 x 1504 touchscreen of last year’s model. The proportions are still 3:2.

We haven’t tested the Surface Laptop 5, but since it’s the same as the Surface Laptop 4, we know it has a very good screen that can compete with anything that isn’t OLED. The fact is that it will be hard to beat the MacBook Air M2. The new MacBook has a 13.6-inch, 2560 x 1664-pixel Liquid Retina screen, which is bigger than the 13.3-inch screen on the old model. In this case, it is true that bigger is better.

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5 Performance

Both laptops work well, but they are not the most powerful ones out there. Both start with 256 GB of SSD storage, but the Surface Laptop 5 goes all the way up to 1 TB. The MacBook Air M2, on the other hand, can use a 2 TB SSD drive. Both devices have 8 GB of RAM to start, but the Surface Laptop 5 has 32 GB and the MacBook Air M2 has 24 GB. If you need a lot of local storage, you can store more on the MacBook Air M2.

If you want more RAM, you can choose more storage space on the Surface Laptop 5. If you are worried about RAM or performance, you should know that macOS Ventura is not as demanding as Windows 11. So, the Microsoft laptop has more RAM and better performance, but the Surface Laptop 5 has more memory. So, even if the Microsoft laptop has more RAM, it might not handle tasks as smoothly as the Apple laptop. Not to mention that Apple’s M2 chip is faster and uses less energy than similar chips made by Intel.

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5 Battery life

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5

Microsoft says that the Surface Laptop 5 with a 13.5-inch screen can be used for up to 18 hours, while the Surface Laptop 5 with a 15-inch screen can be used for up to 17 hours. Apple says that the MacBook Air M2 can be used to browse the web for up to 15 hours. This means that Microsoft Surface laptops are the most durable ones on the market. But we’ve seen that laptop companies tend to lie about battery life, so we’re still not sure about Microsoft’s claims until we can test the laptops ourselves.

MacBook Air M2 vs Surface Laptop 5 Webcam

Apple has changed the webcam on the MacBook Air M2 from 720p to 1080p, which makes it seem like it has the best webcam. In our review, we said that it did a good job of capturing color and clarity, but that the details were a bit grainy. The Surface Laptop 5 still has the same 720p webcam, which doesn’t seem to be a strong point.

Microsoft says that the interactive features in Windows 11 have “improved experiences with the camera.” There is also a double far field of view. There is also a remote studio microphone with two mics. At least it has Windows Hello, which makes it easy to get in. Whether these changes will be enough to make the 720p webcam itself better. We’ll have to give it a shot.

FAQs

Is Microsoft laptop better than Mac?

For ST performance, the Surface Laptop 5 is better than the MacBook Air, but for MT performance, the MacBook Air holds its own. Even though the MacBook Air is still faster than the Surface Laptop 5, this shows that the M2 chip is not as hard to get as many people think.

Why is Mac better than Surface?

Again, it supports the P3 gamut and Apple’s True Tone technology, but it also supports 120Hz refresh rates and has a mini-LED panel, which means it can have much, much higher brightness and HDR performance than the Surface Pro screens.
