NordVPN vs VyprVPN: which VPN service is better for your needs?

NordVPN and VyprVPN are two of the best VPNs on the market, and they both put a lot of emphasis on security and privacy. But even though they both want to keep user data safe, there are important differences between them. Most of the time, NordVPN is the best option because it offers a great value, with a wide range of features and fast connection speeds.

VyprVPN, on the other hand, is a slightly more expensive option, but it makes up for it with unique features, most notably its innovative Chameleon technology, which helps people get around VPN blocking and censorship. Thus, while NordVPN excels in affordability and comprehensive features, VyprVPN appeals to users seeking advanced capabilities and specialized tools, even if it comes at a slightly higher cost.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN: Pricing

Let’s start with the obvious: NordVPN and VyprVPN are among the most expensive VPNs for short-term subscribers, at $11.95 and $12.95 USD per month, respectively. But because the discounts are so big for longer plans, it seems like these services are mostly for people who want cheap long-term coverage.

Monthly plan$12.99$12.95
Yearly plan$4.99$5.00
2-year plan$89 (~$3.49/mo)N/A
3-year plan$125.64 (~$3.49/mo)$60 (~$2.00/mo)
Simultaneous connections630
Extra featuresAd blocker, CyberSec, Double VPN, Onion over VPN, Tor over VPNChameleon protocol, VyprDNS, VyprVPN Connect
Refund policy30 days30 days

For example, a NordVPN plan for three years costs $125.64 ($3.49 per month). This is less than a third of the price you’d pay on the monthly plan ($430.20) for the same length of time. VyprVPN’s price goes down even more. Now, it only costs $45 per year or $60 for two years. So, even though they have high monthly costs, these two services are some of the most affordable on the market, as long as you’re willing to pay for at least a year in advance.

Both NordVPN and VyprVPN let you get your money back within 30 days. This means you can try out either service and get your money back if it doesn’t work for you. Additionally, VyprVPN offers a three-day free trial, provided you sign up through the Android or iOS app. You should keep in mind, though, that you will have to give your payment information before the trial starts.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN Comparison Table

Both NordVPN and VyprVPN are well-known VPN services, but they are different in important ways. NordVPN has a huge server network and strong security features, making it a great choice for users who want access to the whole world and the best privacy possible. On the other hand, VyprVPN focuses on its own Chameleon protocol, which is made to get around internet restrictions. This makes it a good choice for people who are having trouble with online censorship. The choice between the two comes down to what each person wants and what they need.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN: Setup and Interface

NordVPN vs VyprVPN

It’s clear that these VPNs worked hard to make their apps as easy to use as possible. The desktop app for VyprVPN is simple. It has a button to connect quickly on the home screen and links to the settings page and server list at the bottom. The settings menu isn’t very big, but we liked that we could sort servers by speed, country, and even region. On the left side of NordVPN’s main page is a map and a list of servers, as well as a quick-connect button. We recommend using the list because the map markers are often close to each other, making it hard to find a specific country in places like Europe without zooming in all the way.

On the plus side, you can choose P2P and obfuscated servers right from the main screen, so you never have to give up security for convenience. Most VPNs’ mobile apps have fewer features than their desktop versions. We were pleased to see that VyprVPN’s mobile app not only does everything that the desktop version does, it even adds a new feature: “Connection per app,” more commonly known as “split tunnelling.” This lets you choose which apps don’t go through the VPN.

For example, if your connection is slow and you only want to protect traffic from your browser or messaging app, you can do this. The mobile app for NordVPN is almost the same as the desktop version. The server list is moved down, so the map takes up most of the screen. Still, you can scroll to get to a list of servers, and specialty servers are in their own section at the top. There are also all of the most important security features, like a kill switch, a malware scanner, and split tunnelling, which isn’t available in the desktop apps.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN: Speed

NordVPN vs VyprVPN

In our last comparison between NordVPN and VyprVPN, both services had problems. Even though NordVPN connections were fast, they were not always the same in different places. On the other hand, VyprVPN had decent speeds, but far-away servers were often inconsistent. Both NordVPN and VyprVPN’s updated VPN protocols seem to have smoothed out the rough spots this time. With the new NordLynx protocol, NordVPN’s connection speeds are much faster and the annoying inconsistencies have been fixed.

VyprVPN now comes set up with the WireGuard protocol, but it recommends its own Chameleon protocol. We ran a number of speed tests with different protocols to see how the two VPN services compare in terms of speed. For the first speed test, we used OpenVPN-UDP for both services so that everything would be fair.

Winner: NordVPN

In the battle between NordVPN and VyprVPN, NordVPN comes out on top. With the updated NordLynx protocol, NordVPN offers much faster connection speeds and fixes the problems that were happening before. Even though VyprVPN also uses a reliable protocol called WireGuard, NordVPN is the better choice if you want a VPN connection that is faster and more reliable.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN: Features

VyprVPN has easy-to-use apps for all of the major platforms, while NordVPN offers a command-line-based installer for Linux systems as well as browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. It’s important to remember, though, that these extensions only encrypt browser traffic. They don’t protect any of your other apps. Both services let you connect automatically when using an unsecured wireless network, but again, NordVPN goes above and beyond with its built-in malware-scanner and ad-blocker.

Also, NordVPN lets you connect up to six devices at once, while VyprVPN only lets you connect five devices at once. NordVPN is great at getting around geo-restrictions on streaming services. In fact, it was able to handle any problem we threw at it, even services like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, which are known for being hard to work with. Also, it’s important to know that every server can unblock Netflix. If you attempt to access a regional library that NordVPN can’t unblock, the site will simply redirect to Netflix US.

But VyprVPN puts up a good fight here. This VPN lets you access popular services like ITV Hub, ABC, and Amazon Prime Video even when they are blocked. It also usually lets you access BBC iPlayer, but when we tested it, we couldn’t get to it. This was likely because of an update to something that detects VPNs. The status log for VyprVPN shows that it usually fixes these kinds of problems within a few days, which is a good thing.

The Winner: NordVPN

In this matchup, NordVPN comes out on top. It is easy to set up, with command-line options for Linux, browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox, and automatic connection on unsecured networks. Its malware-scanner and ad-blocker are very good, and they are built in. Also, NordVPN stands out because it can get around geo-restrictions on major streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. It supports up to six connections at the same time and is a great deal for users who want strong privacy and smooth streaming.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN: Security and Privacy

In this round, we look at the VPN protocols and encryption each VPN uses, as well as how many leaks or other security problems they have had in the past. Also, we read each VPN’s privacy policies to see if there’s anything sneaky hidden in the small print. Your VPN protocol and encryption only make your internet traffic as safe as they are. The gold standard is the pair of OpenVPN and AES-256. It guarantees top-notch security and is an option with both VyprVPN and NordVPN. But neither of the providers use it as their default VPN protocol.

On Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows devices, NordVPN now uses a combination of its own NordLynx (a version of WireGuard) and ChaCha20 encryption by default. Even though it’s new, WireGuard is just as safe as OpenVPN, but it handles changes to the network better and is faster on mobile devices. OpenVPN is available on all platforms besides NordLynx, and you can choose to connect via UDP or TCP. Last but not least, you can use IKEv2 on iOS and Mac devices with NordVPN. AES-256-GCM encryption is used by both OpenVPN and IKEv2.

In this review of VPN protocols and encryption, NordVPN stands out as the clear winner. Both VyprVPN and NordVPN offer the gold standard combination of OpenVPN and AES-256, but NordVPN goes one step further by using its own NordLynx, a version of WireGuard, with ChaCha20 encryption by default on Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows devices. This makes NordVPN a good choice for privacy-conscious users because it offers top-notch security, better network handling, and faster performance on mobile devices.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN: Server Locations

NordVPN vs VyprVPN

We looked at how many servers each VPN service had and where those servers were located. A large number of servers gives you more IP addresses from different countries, which you can use to access content that is blocked in your country. Plus, a bigger server count makes finding a server with an optimal load for excellent performance easier.

When it comes to the number of servers, NordVPN is the clear winner. The service provider has more than 5,200 VPN servers in different parts of the world. The servers are real, physical machines. In other words, they are actually in the same place as the IP address they give you. Read our article about virtual servers vs. physical servers to find out more.

VyprVPN has more than 700 servers, which is a small number in the VPN industry. The small server network is made up for by the fact that it has more than 300,000 IP addresses. The VyprVPN server network is different from NordVPN in that it has both virtual and physical servers

The Winner:

In terms of the number of servers, NordVPN is the clear winner. It has over 5,200 physical VPN servers spread all over the world. This huge network gives users many IP addresses from different countries, so they can access content that is normally blocked without any problems. VyprVPN, on the other hand, has a smaller server network of 700 servers, but it has a huge pool of 300,000 IP addresses, which makes it a strong but not first-place contender.

NordVPN: Pros and Cons

  • Vast server network with over 5,000 servers in 60 countries.
  • Strong security features, including AES-256 encryption and a strict no-logs policy.
  • High-speed performance and reliable connections.
  • Versatile support for multiple devices and platforms.
  • Excellent customer support.

  • Slightly more expensive than some other VPN providers.
  • The desktop app interface could be more intuitive.

VyprVPN: Pros and Cons

  • Solid security measures with its proprietary Chameleon protocol.
  • Good connection speeds for most users.
  • User-friendly apps and easy setup.
  • VyprVPN owns and operates its servers for better control.

  • Smaller server network compared to NordVPN.
  • Logs some connection details, though it has a strict no-logs policy.
  • May not unblock certain streaming services.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN: Overall Winner

In the battle between NordVPN and VyprVPN, NordVPN comes out on top. NordVPN is fast and reliable because it has a huge server network with more than 5,000 servers in 60 countries. Users’ privacy and anonymity are protected by its strong security features, such as AES-256 encryption and a strict “no logs” policy. Also, NordVPN works with many different devices and platforms, making it very flexible. Even though both VyprVPN and NordVPN offer good security and performance, NordVPN has a wider global reach and better customer service. NordVPN is the best choice for VPN users who want the best protection and performance.

Is Nord still the best VPN?

One of the safest VPN services is NordVPN. All of NordVPN’s servers run on RAM and use the best encryption and tunnelling protocols on the market to keep your data safe.

What is the #1 best VPN?

Best VPN overall after its review in 2023. It stays at the top of the virtual private network services list because it cares about privacy and has fast speeds.
